2011 National Signing Day Open Thread

Over the next few hours, members of the Stanford football recruiting class of 2011 will fax their National Letters of Intent to Palo Alto. The compliance department will verify the LOIs before Stanford officially releases the names via Twitter. Get excited. The Spring Game at Kezar Stadium is only 2 months away.

Last year, Cardinal fans who followed Jim Harbaugh on Twitter were treated to a barrage of (area) coded tweets from the head coach on National Signing Day as the faxes from recruits rolled in. I'll be interested to see how @StanfordFball breaks the news this year, but be on the lookout for 770 (James Vaughters), 754 (Wayne Lyons), and 916 (Jordan Richards).

Stanford's projected recruiting class, which includes 19 players who have made verbal commitments and is headlined by Vaughters, is ranked in the top 25 by the major recruiting sites.

Are you expecting any surprises today?

The faxes are rolling in. How long will it be before recruits can e-mail, or tweet, their official LOIs?

As someone who has never obsessed about how many four-star vs. three-star recruits Stanford is able to land, I really enjoyed Ted Miller’s look at the rrecruiting rankings of the 22 members of the 2010 All-Pac-10 team.

You can watch a live stream of UW’s fax machine on Steve Sarkisian’s Facebook page. Brilliant.

Congrats on what looks to be a very solid class. Even though the coaching change affected a couple of guys, it didn’t seem to hurt you guys overall.

If the ratings guys are right about the last this year and last, the upcoming Big Games will be Big indeed.

I'm thinking of having a little party down in Newport.

I've never really taken big stock in recruiting rankings

As countless teams have shown, you can have elite ranked recruiting classes and have pitiful teams for well beyond the three to five years that you would expect to feel the effects of such a class.

The counter also holds true. You can have some lightly recruited, not highly ranked players that end up being huge role players for the team (Luck, Stephen Paea).

I look at the rankings as an estimate of potential based on assumption of skill. So it is definitely not the most accurate predictor. Of course coaching development and player dedication are critical to having results live up to ranking, but the evaluations aren’t completely unfounded.

That being said, I agree with your take about all the stars and stuff. Oh, and you can add Aaron Rodgers to that list of lightly regarded players who ended up pretty good (though I understand why you’d have neglected him). And, for what it’s worth, I seem to recall that Luck was pretty highly rated.

In any case, congrats on a getting a nice group of kids.

Ha, Rodgers

It wasn’t an intentional oversight. He was a great QB at Cal (I don’t think you’ll find a Stanford fan who will dispute you on that) who ended up being an even better QB in Green Bay.
