Coach Shaw started off his press conference celebrating the great week of practice the team had and is excited by the way his team is playing and the fact they continue to get better. Shaw said that the Oregon State game gave us a glimpse of how he expected the team to look all year. He celebrated the performance of his offensive line stated that if the line gave either Christian McCaffrey or Bryce Love a crease those guys can take it to the end zone.
Of Keller Chryst’s performance coach Shaw said that he again saw some things he liked and some things he didn’t like but that Chryst looked good for his second game as starter. Shaw, like most of us, said that he would like to see his young quarterback connect on more deep throws. He also was not frustrated by the offense stalling out in the red zone because with an experienced quarterback the offense is not going to take too many risks in the red zone. Shaw went so far as to say that as long as the defense is playing the way they are that he has no problem kicking field goals.
The best part of the press conference game when a reporter asked what he thought about Nate Herbig and his epic block that took out two guys and sprung Bryce Love free for a 56-yard touchdown run. Shaw’s face absolutely lit up during the question and he beamed while talking about Nate Herbig at length.
Shaw was asked what Keller Chryst needs to do to improve as a quarterback. Shaw responded: “It’s just playing”. He further elaborated that Chryst was much more accurate and completed far more reps in practice but that did not show up in the game Saturday. In other words, the talent, knowledge, and ability seem to be there for Chryst but it is not coming through in a live game but will once Chryst has more game experience.
