Despite playing well below expectations, Stanford is 6-3 and even managed to pick up a couple of votes in the Coaches Poll this week (I double checked, David Shaw is not one of the voters). The top 4 is the same in both polls with our old pal Jim Harbaugh and his Michigan team at number 2, Alabama at number one, Clemson at 3 and the Washington Huskies at number 4.
Elsewhere around the Pac-12 Utah is 13th in the AP and 12th in the Coaches. Colorado is 16th in the AP and 15th in the Coaches Poll. Washington State is 23rd in both polls. Even Stanford picked up 2 votes in the Coaches poll. The USC Trojans are also at the top of the list in the “others receiving votes” category in both polls this week so if they manage to pull off the upset against Washington on Saturday they should officially enter the rankings.

The Associated Press Top 25: The longest-running and best-respected human poll. Didn't have any official bearing on the latter years of the BCS, and doesn't have any official bearing on the Playoff. Most outlets (including SB Nation) will use the AP's rankings as the standard until the committee takes over in November, though. Usually comes out on Sundays about 2 p.m. ET.
The USA Today Coaches Poll: Formerly part of the BCS, and now just a poll. It tends to react more cautiously than the AP's. Though polling athletic departments in order to rank other athletic departments is dubious, we still want multiple human polls in here, and this is the other big one. Releases early Sunday afternoons.
