The the college football season is finally here and kicking off this weekend! There will be a lot of football going down and I am here to help you sift through all the games to get narrow down to the top five football games. Or you could watch all the games, that’s up to you.
#5 - LSU vs. Wisconsin September 3rd
The big draw here is obviously Leonard Fournette as he has the best Heisman odds this season going into what is essentially a home game for the Badgers in Green Bay. The real question is how the team around Fournette looks as Wisconsin boasts a solid front seven. Despite losing significant offensive talent over the last couple seasons, if the Badgers can somehow find a way to slow down the run game and force the game onto the shoulders of LSU’s quarterback Brandon Harris they could have a punchers chance. However, if Les Miles is correct about his quarterback turning the corner this could get ugly fast for the Badgers.
Prediction: LSU wins 28-13
#4 - USC vs. Alabama September 3rd
To be honest this has potential to only be good in the first half of the game which is why it’s number four. Alabama is returning guys on both sides of the line and they have a nasty knack for finding talent to replenish their linebackers and secondary. They have Calvin Ridley at wide receiver who has Heisman contender potential along with tight end O.J. Howard who lit up the college championship game. All that to go along with Bo Scarborough at running back who is supposed to be better than the man he’s replacing. In case you forgot that man was Derrick Henry who won the Heisman. This is the only team who is replacing a quarterback and no one is worried.
But despite all that USC has a shot to look very special on offense this year, which is how they stay in his game. They are surrounding their new quarterback, Max Browne, with two returning running backs in Ronald Jones and Justin Davis who both finished with close to 1,00 yards a piece and a solid offensive line. He will also be throwing to arguably one of the best receivers in college football: JuJu Smith-Schuster. Despite the lack of talent on defense around Adoree Jackson this could be a great game if the offensive line of USC gives Browne enough time to keep this interesting.
Prediction: Alabama wins 35-27
#3 - Oklahoma vs. Houston September 3rd
This will be a phenomenal game as Oklahoma returns with quarterback Baker Mayfield and highly anticipated redshirt freshman running back Joe Mixon who has been lighting it up all spring and summer. They will be facing off with head coach Tom Hermon and his duel threat quarterback Greg Ward Jr. Ward is coming off a year which saw him throw for 2,828 yards, 17 touchdowns and rushed for 1,108 yards with 21 rushing touchdowns. He has thrived in Herman’s offense which is uptempo spread that gives him plenty of room to rumble. Containing Ward will be a tall task for the Oklahoma defense to start the season out. Jordan Thomas and Dakota Austin, the starting corners for Oklahoma, have to hold down the edges out wide because Ward is going to out run the Oklahoma’s defensive ends.
Prediction: Houston wins 30-27
#2 - Norte Dame Vs. Texas September 4th
These games are always great as Notre Dame leads Texas 9-2 in face offs between these programs. Going into this game Texas is the underdog, however, the Irish roster lost Will Fuller at wide receiver, C.J. Prosise at running back, Jaylen Smith at linebacker, Nick Martian and Ronnie Stanley on the offensive line, Sheldon Day on the defensive line and KeiVarae Russell at cornerback. That is a lot of impart starters to lose along with the five players getting arrested last week for possession of pot. This is the perfect opportunity for Texas to come in and upset an off kilter team.
Prediction: Texas wins 24-17
#1 - Ole’ Miss Vs. Florida State September 5th
This is my game of the week as I am really excited to see Chad Kelly for the Rebels square off against this Seminole secondary, specifically Derwin James who is going to be one of the best defensive backs in college this season as he steps into Jalen Ramsey’s roll. Dalvin Cook against the defensive front of Ole’ Miss will be the other matchup of the night as he is one of the outside Heisman candidates coming into the season. Cook is an under rated back who knows he has some things to prove if he is to take home the most coveted prize in college football. He will power his way past the Rebels and put on a show.
Prediction: Florida State wins 35-28
Extra prediction: Cook rumbles his way to 140 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
