On Saturday night Bryce Love will almost certainly become another player in a long line of Stanford Cardinal football legends to be a runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. Oklahoma Sooners QB Baker Mayfield is a presumed lock to win tonight and the Louiseville Cardinals QB and last year’s Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson is also a finalist for the award.
Love will either make history with an incredible upset or he will join Toby Gerhart, Andrew Luck, and Christian McCaffrey on the list of Stanford greats that were finalists for the Heisman but not winners. The Cardinal stars lost out to Mark Ingram, Cam Newton, Robert Griffin III, and Derrick Henry in the balloting. Tonight will in all likelihood be the fifth time in 8 years a Cardinal great finished second in the Heisman.

According to the mission of the Heisman Trust:
“The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. The winners of the trophy epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work. The Heisman Trophy Trust's mission is to ensure the continuation and integrity of this award.”
This definition can mean many different things to many different voters. Some voters pick the player with the best stats others pick the player with the most hype. Pac-12 Networks' Yogi Roth attempted to understand how members of the media answer this question. Whatever the answer, Bryce Love had an incredible season winning the Doak Walker Award.
