The Stanford Cardinal have been a streaky basketball team in 2017. Since December 30, 2016 the Stanford men’s basketball schedule has played out like this: 4-game losing streak, 3-game winning streak, 3-game losing streak, and finally a win Saturday over the Utah Utes.
Now Stanford basketball coach Jerod Haase takes the Cardinal on a business trip to the state of Arizona starting with a tough matchup tonight with the 9th-ranked Arizona Wildcats who are trying to rebound from a shellacking at the hands of the Oregon Ducks. Arizona Coach Sean Miller does not believe the Ducks’ drubbing of the Wildcats will rattle their confidence but it is a concern of his.
Stanford may need all the help they can get as the Wildcats are the 9th-ranked team in the Nation, and have won 18 straight home games. Stanford on the other hand is 1-6 on the road this year with their lone road win coming against the Oregon State Beavers on January 19th. While Stanford men’s basketball schedule has been grueling having already faced 6 ranked opponents and several more teams that are likely to be NCAA Tournament bound the Cardinal are 0-6 against teams ranked in the top-25.
One additional fact that fails to inspire much confidence is that the last time these two teams played was on New Year’s Day in Maples Pavilion where Arizona clobbered Stanford 91-52. The Cardinal are 14-point underdogs tonight and they will need to play their best game of the season if they want to avoid dropping their 12th loss. Conversely if Reid Travis, Marcus Allen and the rest of the roster did pull off the upset it would easily be their biggest win of the year and the Jerod Haase era.
