The champs are here!

Much more was at stake in the women’s water polo national championship than you may think. This wasn’t just another national championship; this game impacted the all time NCAA championship leaderboard. Heading into the championship matchup between UCLA and Stanford, the Bruins had won 113 NCAA championships as a program while Stanford had won 112.

With the clock winding down, Stanford’s Maggie Steffens fired a shot that clinched the victory for the Cardinal. Immediately, the Stanford women jumped into the pool celebrating the momentous championship. UCLA had been beaten, and Stanford now had tied the Bruins for the most all time NCAA championships.

The Stanford Cardinal has been playing catch up with UCLA for a long time; however recently, the Cardinal have been cutting the gap between UCLA and themselves. Stanford has been consistently dominating collegiate sports, and now, there are no signs of the Cardinal slowing down.

Currently, Stanford leads in the Learfield Directors’ Cup as well as the Capital One Cup, which both honor the nation’s top sports program. This year, Stanford has won four championships and could even add to that number with the golf team preparing for the national championships. By the end of this year, Stanford could lead outright for the most NCAA championships.
