Tyrell Terry was selected with the 31st pick of the 2020 NBA Draft and is headed to the Dallas Mavericks!

A clearly emotional Terry joined the Mavs with the first pick of the second round, and as one of their three draft picks on the evening.

The initial reactions joined with much later, thought-out reactions that all seemed to end up at one point: This is a dream fit for Terry, Dallas.

Terry joins perhaps the NBA’s biggest star-in-the-making in Luka Doncic and forms an incredible duo with Slovenian star. Terry was also joined by the Mavs 18th overall pick in Josh Green as well as Tyler Bey, who they selected with the 36th pick after trading Seth Curry for Josh Richardson and the right to pick at the 36th spot.

Our friends over at Mavs Moneyball had this to say about Terry’s selection on a busy night for Dallas:

He’s an incredible shooter and finisher, despite being very small. Per Jay Bilas on the ESPN draft telecast, he shot an insane 58% off screens.

At this point in the draft it’s a value pick, with some draft experts rating Terry as utterly outstanding.

The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor gave more details about Terry through the draft process:

All 30 teams have interviewed Terry, and he’ll be one of the prospects invited to the NBA draft’s virtual green room. “Nobody thought he would be a one-and-done, including himself. But as he got going, he kept exceeding everybody’s expectations,” Stanford associate head coach Adam Cohen told me. Stanford considered redshirting Terry for his freshman season so he could work on his body, but he ended up starting all but one game

Terry himself gave some terrific answers to questions regarding his selection to Dallas, to our friends over at Mavs Moneyball.

When asked what he felt about his selection, Terry had clearly done his homework on the Mavericks.

How do you see yourself fitting in in Dallas alongside Luka and Kristaps Porzingis?

TYRELL TERRY: I think for me, just the way I’m able to shoot the ball, I’m going to be a valuable tool for Luka, especially off pick-and-rolls and finding shooters and also being a secondary ball handler for that role as well. Being able to create — space the floor for Kristaps is going to be important, I think. So I think I’ll be a very good fit for them.

Terry also said the draft went very well for him personally and he can’t wait to get to Dallas to get to work.

There are so many more quotes from Terry on his selection to the Mavs — and we’ll get those on Rule of Tree today as well.

Congratulations to Tyrell! A Cardinal for life, a Maverick as a pro. We’ll be watching closely!
