The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will forever go down in history as the Olympics that were delayed a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now that we at least have a plan for the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, we can start looking forward to all the Stanford Cardinal athletes that will be in competition.
The most recent to join them is sailer Luke Muller, ‘18.
Muller earned the opportunity as the country’s sole representative in the Finn class. American Finn sailors have medaled in three of the last four Olympics.
“Earning the Olympic spot means the world to me, but I still have a lot of work to do” said Muller.
He was supposed to have another qualifying chance in Spain this past May, but that was canceled due to COVID-19 and as such, his placing in the 2019 World Championships and 2020 World Cup were good enough to qualify.
He was one of the best sailors in the country while at Stanford and qualified for four consecutive singlehanded national championships as well as two additional top-10 finishes. He was a team captain and became the first Stanford sailor to earn a spot on America’s Cup team since the 1980s.
Congratulations, Luke! Way to represent Stanford!
