The first three games were in some respects just a prelude, but the business end of the Stanford Cardinal’s season is truly here, as they are set to face the University of Louisville in the Elite Eight on Tuesday evening.

No. 1 seed Stanford takes on No. 2 seed Louisville, who are certain to not be pushovers in the 2021 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. Ranked No. 1 nationally back in December, for the first time in program history, the Cardinals won the ACC regular season title and lost to NC State in the ACC tournament final. All told, Louisville lost just three times this season — twice against NC State and once against Florida State.

Stanford are coming off a commanding win over Missouri State on Sunday, while Louisville downed another Pac-12 side, Oregon, on Sunday. Dana Evans rolled for Louisville in the game, scoring 29 in a 60-42 win. In contrast, Stanford’s approach against Missouri State was to take a balanced approach, with four players reaching double digits in points and Tara VanDerveer going deep on her bench.

Having said all that, once again Stanford are favored and they are expected to advance from this game. That doesn’t mean it will be easy, but they are the top seeded team in the tournament for a reason, and two of their three games in the NCAA Tournament have been blowout wins. This game is the kind of matchup they’ve been working towards all season, so they need to go out there and show why they are the top-ranked team in the field, and get one step closer to the ultimate prize.
