Seems a bid edgier than usual in this press conference. Understandable, I guess.

First thing I noticed. Understandable since he feels they could have executed better and won the game.

Yes
There may have been a few questionable coaching decisions in this game; but the loss, on the whole, was attributable to sloppy execution in key situations. Frustrating for him, for the team and for us. And somehow, we matter the least in this equation, even though the frustration is still there.

Always Edgier When You Lose, Right?
On the whole, I think his assessment was fair. In the rear view mirror, passing on first down near the goal line (when it did not work), and then following with a couple of runs that don’t get the 10 yards seemed lack a high risk way to pursue a touchdown. Similarly, on the 2 point conversion, I would have play actioned to McCaffrey to try to freeze the Oregon D a little. We have big bodies who can get in position for a pass in that situation. But, in truth, none of this is on Shaw.
The defensive lapses were expected, in my view. Oregon is strong with the run and the pass. Having said that, the D stepped up big time at the end of second half several times getting critical stops to give Stanford a chance to win. Which we would have if we had managed to snap the ball cleanly a couple of times. Penalties also hurt us – on both sides of the ball.
Bottom line, as Shaw stated, we needed touchdowns not field goals, and we needed to avoid turning the ball over. The D played well enough situationally for us to win this game – despite giving up several big plays.
Sure…………we should have won that game. But Oregon is probably the best three loss team in the country (especially factoring in injuries to Adams) and they are always a really tough opponent for us. The Northwestern loss absolutely killed me…………….this loss I can understand and deal with.

Significant Issue in Loss to Oregon
Having seen my first Stanford game in 1954 what struck me as pivotal in the loss to Oregon was the new center for the jumbo package TWICE screwing up the exchange with Hogan. THAT it was repeated seems a stupid thing and the whole issue of bringing in a different center may act to deter the desired effect of the formation. Overall, the lack of redzone aggressiveness like a pass on first down versus run run also did not help for making touchdowns instead of field goals.

Good point

It's not new
Caspers has been practicing center through spring camp with shuler out. Also this is the first real bad snap after a couple of ones early in the oregon state and arizona game. They want more beef in the jumbo and ogre package and caspers is significantly heavier than shuler to provide that push.
