Stanford Men's Basketball: Cardinal- 77, Cal- 71: Highlights and Reactions

MBB vs. Cal: Rosco Allen & Marcus Allen Press Conference

Recap from the Stanford Athletic Department at GoStanford.com

"The win marked the 100th at Maples Pavilion for Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins, who recently celebrated his 150th career coaching win.

Stanford jumped out to an early lead, shook off a scoring drought midway through the first half then closed on a 20-8 run to take a 41-35 halftime lead. Sheffield led the surge with nine points, including a layup in traffic with eight seconds remaining.

California, coming off back-to-back losses at Oregon and Oregon State, shot just 37.1 percent in the first half. Brown, the Bears' second-leading scorer who had 20 points in each of the losses, spent most of the time on the bench after picking up his second foul 3:15 into the game.

Stanford will have a week to prepare for its next contest against No. 18 Arizona. The Cardinal and Wildcats will square off in Maples Pavilion on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. PT."

Great win for the team

The tough part will be to repeat this win over at Cal’s place.

Tough part

is putting two conferences wins in a row together

TGIF

Dawkins still needs to go

Give him 1 more season maybe

Although I was a firm he needs to go guy, it seems like this is a very young team that is punching above weight with so many injuries. Offensive consistency and some defensive adjustments will buy him some time in my book.

Yes, that is the curious part with Dawkins

When expectations are low, his teams surprise on the positive side; and when expectations are high, his teams disappoint. I still don’t have high expectations for this team, and that is probably the correct way to view this year’s Cardinal in the context of the Pac-12. One thing is clear: Dawkins certainly hasn’t been able to coach the team to consistent performance. Dawkins and Co. host the two Arizona schools next week; and if they can improve to 4-3 or even 5-2 in Pac-12 play, we might start entertaining the thought of an NCAA playoff berth. But in all seriousness, I don’t see us progressing beyond NIT level this season.

On the scheduling side, Stanford plays USC and UCLA only once this season (at home); same with UW and WSU, but the games are at their place. All other Pac-12 teams have a home and away with Stanford. Thirteen games to go before the tournament. 8-5 from this point probably won’t do it for the tournament (no signature out of conference wins to bolster the resume).

inconsistency

Has been the hallmark of the Dawkins years. I saw him at a coaches swing and didn’t even speak to him. Ok, that was mean. but I just hate where we have fallen

The annual Fire Vs. Don't Fire Dawkins piece in...

5…4…3…2…

He should have been fired years ago

Similar to Tomsula, the performance this season, given the talent level and injuries, isn’t a firing offense per se – it’s more about recognizing that it’s a mistake for him to be there in the first place.

After reading the above comments..

i’m struck by how out of touch "paparosen" is.. along with a couple others here (like CardLA).. but even Layman’s tone is basically disrespectful and very reminiscent of the tone one frequently read in comments about David Shaw just 4 and a half months ago…:
"I’ll give him 1 more season"…
Give me a break !

Papa says, it’s.. "..a mistake for him (JD) to be (at Stanford as HC) in the first place."

Note – NO corroborating evidence is presented to back up the statement.. only a companion comment stating that, "..Dawkins still needs to go." — Still no reasoning behind it. As if, when Papa says so, you got to go..

NOT !

Why not ? Because, for instance, JD’s record and his performance as a head coach is actually BETTER than that of Mike Montgomery at a similar point in their careers at Stanford, and NOBODY in their right mind would ever pronounce that MM shouldn’t have been at Stanford in the first place, or that Montgomery "still needs to go…"

And yet, when you OBJECTIVELY compare MM’s record to JD’s, JD’s is actually better :
After 7 seasons and 241 games coached, JD’s record at Stanford was 141-100, with 2 NIT ‘ships and an NCAA Sweet 16, to his credit.
After 8 seasons and 244 games coached, MM’s record at Stanford was 142-102, with 1 NIT ’ship and NO NCAA Sweet 16.*

*Add to the above the fact that MM had had 10 yrs of HCing experience at Montana, prior to coming to Stanford; and JD had NO prior HCing experience before coming to Stanford.
JD’s prior coaching experience was at Duke under the legendary Coach K, where he was the assistant coach for 10 years in charge of player development – and during his tenure there, Duke frequently went to the pinnacle, so i’d definitely say, just for starters, he’s vastly more credible as an expert at basketball knowledge and coaching than the aforementioned "paparosen".

If anyone needs to go, it’s paparosen..
