Can Stanford Land the Best Wide Receiver in the Country?

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

In this edition of Cardinal CounTree, Matt Vassar discusses Stanford possibly landing the best wide receiver in the country, Demetris Robertson. He also talks about David Shaw stealing two recruits from Jim Harbaugh in a single day, and argues that Shaw is the better coach of the two. Also, does race play a role in why Harbaugh has been receiving more praise than Shaw? Finally, he wraps up the show talking about the good, the bad, and the ugly for Stanford alumni playing in the Pro Bowl on Sunday.

Derp

That’s embarrassing.

Just listened to the playback of this episode and caught myself right at the beginning referring to Demetris Robertson as "Demetris Hamilton." Clearly I had too many Hamiltons on the brain (Gerry Hamilton, Devery Hamilton).

Only Stanford recruits...

have to wait for their SAT scores to see if they can play football there.

yes, it limits the pool of applicants, but it’s just that much more special when you get accepted.

They only thing Demetris Robertson is waiting for is for the Stanford system to fully play out.

I’m guessing he has Stanford as his number one choice, otherwise he wouldn’t be waiting to sign.

I wonder, how many more scholarship openings does Stanford have left this year?

I know at least one kid is going on a two year Mormon mission, but we have that many kids come off scholarship?
Does any one have an idea of our count?
I know SC was playing games with count during the sanction period.
I can’t believe Shaw would put himself in the same position.

I was told...

that people on the staff were under the impression they didn’t want to sign over 25. Right now we have 25 adding Pryts and not having Simi of scholarship until 2018-2019

Thanks Sean. I wonder if a spot for Demetris Robertson is built into that 25 number or has he now waited too long.

Our walk-on program

The thing with coach shaw is he typically leaves a couple of roster spots open for walk-ons. Remember last year when craig jones and ukropina got scholies. So, we might just have to burn that incase we oversign but it can be easily adjusted when transfers eventually happen.

Not correct that Robertson would be the highest rared recruit in Stanford history, John Elway, Kwame Harris, Mike Craven and Bob Whitfield all were more highly rated. In his senior year, Sporting News projected Whitfield as the first team All Pro offensive tackle ten years later—the only high school player named to its listl
