Former Stanford Head Coach, Dennis Green, passed away at the age of 67. Matt Vassar celebrates Denny's biggest wins and pays homage to his lasting legacy at Stanford. He also comments on David Shaw doubling his salary in 2014, and talks about both 247 and Scout now ranking Stanford commit Davis Mills as the top QB in the country. Might Davis Mills be the next Andrew Luck?

Great description of the best Big Game in Big Game history Matt. That is one of those games I will never forget, lost my voice yelling at that one. Dennis Green was the coach of a team that was a big deal for me as I was in high school and just starting to really understand the game of football. I remember watching him coach a practice once and admired the way he ran his scrimmages. The thing that really blows me away about those years is, yes the power offense he used to run, but also the amazing defense he put together. Ron George was a man Dennis liked a lot and when it looked like he wouldn’t have an NFL career, after what a leader he was on the Stanford defense, Dennis Green brought him onto the Vikings.
Side note to that Big Game (though I’m sure there are many), before the game winning field goal, Cal called a timeout to try to ice the kicker. The Cal grounds crew took away the net that the kickers used to practice with because they were afraid of them getting taken after the field got swarmed with fans (at least I guess that was the reason). Dennis Green saw what happened and told Hopkins (his kicker) to take his practice kicks anyways and not care that they’d end up in the stands. Hopkins proceeded to launch the rest of the footballs he had into the Stanford student section. If you re-watch the game you’ll hear the Stanford fans intermittently cheering during the last timeout… they were cheering for each free football they received.

I LOVE this!
That is some excellent trivia, NowBoy! Love the story of the fans cheering every time they got an opportunity to catch a football.
Many thanks for sharing, my man. I’ll give you a shout out on the next show.
