Kaden Smith Declares for the NFL Draft

Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

The Stanford offense is losing another piece to the pros—this time, it’s tight end Kaden Smith, who declared for the Draft on January 1.

The redshirt sophomore announced his decision on social media:

Coach David Shaw compared the 6-foot-5, 252-pound tight end to Zach Ertz earlier this season. Smith missed the last four games of this season with a nagging injury.

Smith finishes his career with 70 receptions for 1,049 yards and 7 TDs.

Best wishes in the NFL Mr. Smith.

Go Stanford.

I wish Kaden success as well

But Stanford is having a substantial loss of talent this off season. I’m not knowledgeable about what we have in the pipeline. Tell me they’ve got prospects lined up…

Yeah, I have the same concern here

Should be a good sign for future recruiting though, especially if these guys do well on draft day. The Stanford > NFL pipeline continues to ramp up. And they’ll get a great education to boot!

I hope Smith intends to finish his degree.

Best wishes to Kaden Smith in the the NFL. Thanks for the good memories!

We hardly knew you

As great a player as he is, when you combine a red shirt year, the early departure and the injury, he basically played a little more than season and a half for the team. I wonder if it still makes sense to red shirt a great player like Smith if the expectation is that he’s going to leave after three years.

He came in injured after his senior campaign in HS

That makes sense

But OP has a point as well. If we’re going to have a bunch of these guys declaring early for the draft, maybe we should play them as true frosh. Don’t know what that will do to them academically, though…
