Week 1, Stanford vs Oregon open thread

We’re here — the day has finally come.

Your Stanford Cardinal take on the Oregon Ducks in Week 1 of the Pac-12 football season and there was plenty of talk about the Pac-12 from the national media. Included in that was our first look at ESPN’s College GameDay crew and their selections for the Stanford vs Oregon game.

And would you look at that — Desmond Howard is a fan of the Cardinal.

Important bit of news from the ESPN programming social accounts as well — the game will still air on ABC, ESPNEWS and the ESPN App but when President-Elect Joe Biden’s speech begins, the ABC broadcast will be interrupted.

The game will remain on ESPNEWS, however.

Let this stand as your Week 1 Open Thread — let’s discuss what we’re seeing, what we like, what we don’t like, our first impressions, etc.

The Cardinal are back!

Mills out

Welp that’s literally the game there. No point seeing a win here with that news. Only interest is how tanner mckee goes if David Shaw is going to let him play. The UCLA version of jack west is something I can’t tolerate for a 6am start

And Conor Wedington out, greeeeaaat

WR group is deep

If there was 1 group which can absorb losses on the roster it’s the WR position. Expect Elijah Higgins and Osiris St Brown to step up and maybe RBs in the screen game.

I hope we get to see some Tanner McKee as West hasn't exactly blown me away in his previous performances

Knowing DS that's an achievement

Coach shaw hasn’t exactly been open to playing freshmen QBs in the past. He will let jack west play the whole game because he is a senior. Also don’t know how many reps Mckee has with that fat playbook

Btw brutal loss for ASU

Lead by 13 with 3 mins to go and lost. Home advantage is still a thing despite the lack of crowd noise

Man, West looks nervous coming onto the field

Excited to see peat on the returns

I really like an austin jones and peat 1-2 like that deep RB stable in 2011 with taylor, gaffney & wilkerson

Well, in defense of Shaw, West can hand off with the best of 'em

Austin Jones is fun

So far OL is opening some holes. Need to wait for adjustments to fully judge them

And there's West's weakness, has a TD but can't make the throw

Absolutely crushing <img src="//fonts.voxmedia.com/emoji/unicode/1f61e.png" alt=":disappointed:" class="emoji">

This is why I was excited for this matchup with Davis Mills. Hopefully Tanner Mckee gets to the field soon

Expect Oregon D to stack the box

If west can’t hit those 1-1 on the outside (which will be open with our WR stable), then expect a stacked box against the run soon

Zero reason for them not to stack the box so far, yeah...

I don't think I've ever seen Jet miss a kick so badly

Give up run on 3rd and 7 and missed FG

Classic DS on the road. Conservative playcalls

Liking the open field tackle and run support from safety

Need more pressure from the OLBs

Thomas Booker is playing extremely well on the inside

The whole defensive line seems to be a major advantage over a young, completely new and visibly shaky offensive line for the Ducks

Early returns though

DL starters look the part. But without a good rotation and an offense that lets them rest, can see the wall breaking as the game wears on

At first look, I'm not seeing a #12 ranking for the Ducks

They’re often overrated.

Crappy throw, great catch

Cut away stream here

Relying on play-by-play

You just missed a great false start by the OL

Then a checkdown throw, followed by a good read for a quick slant that almost went for a TD

Offense!

Thanks

Jones in for TD, got the radio stream working
