Tyrell Terry declares for the NBA Draft

Unsurprising, but surely disappointing that we won’t get to see him another year, Tyrell Terry has officially declared for the 2020 NBA Draft.

Terry had an incredible season in his first and only season with Stanford, earning All-Pac-12 and All-Freshman honors as he averaged 14.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. He also had the top free-throw percentage in the conference, knocking home 89.1% of his free throws this season.

He’s put his name into the NBA draft picture and though he can withdraw his name from consideration by June 3, and not lose college eligibility. Not saying that is the case here, though, but it certainly could be after Terry’s quote to the Stanford Athletics department.

“I couldn’t be more thankful for Cardinal nation: The coaches, my teammates, and the fans,” said Terry. “I wouldn’t be here without their help and support. I feel it is best for me at this time to chase my dreams to play in the NBA while keeping my options open.”

That date may also fluctuate as the NBA draft is currently set for June 25 but with coronavirus likely postponing or cancelling in-person workouts, the draft itself may be postponed and moved to a later date.

Still, we’re excited for you Tyrell, as is head coach Jerod Haase.

“We are excited for Ty and fully support his decision to explore the NBA Draft process,” said Jerod Haase, The Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men’s Basketball. “His childhood dream has been to play in the NBA and we will be with him as he pursues this. He is currently leaving all options on the table and will be keeping his eligibility.”

His name is etched in the record books as a freshman basketball player and could also subsequently become possibly the program’s 13th player to be taken in the first round of an NBA draft.

Here’s hoping for nothing but the best for you Tyrell, Go Card!

I think Tyrell is getting some bad advice

His body isn’t even fully ready for Pac-12 play through a whole season, let alone the NBA where everyone is bigger, faster, and stronger.

No chance of him getting drafted

Totally agree with the post above. Tyrell is 6’2", 160 pounds. Steph Curry is 6’3", 190 pounds. Right now, Tyrell is not even listed in the top 70 players coming out this year. Also, if you look at his game, it still has many holes. Three assists a game, for a point guard? A decent ball handler, quick enough for Stanford, but not super quick. An okay shot, but not deadly, except at the free throw line. And why come out now when there won’t even be an NBA season in the fall. His dream, like so many high school basketball players, is to play in the NBA. But unlike those others, he can stay at Stanford (for free), get an education and, hopefully, a degree. Then if his dream doesn’t pan out (very likely), he has options other than playing in Europe, China, or Australia.
My guess is that he’ll see such little interest in him that he’ll come back.

Can he transfer if he doesn't get picked in the draft?

I don’t understand the rules. Would he have other options other than coming back to Stanford, and do we think he just doesn’t want to come back, period, no matter what happens with the draft?

I agree, he seems nowhere near ready...

Now that Ziare Williams is on board, and if da Silva and Davis stay, that’d be a potent lineup if Terry came back. Plus, the new recruits, particularly the PF Murrell.

Also, no one comes to the games, so you’re still practicing social distancing.

Come back, Tyrell!!
