The 2020 NFL Draft came and went, seeing just two Stanford Cardinal players selected within its seven rounds. Colby Parkinson headed a bit north to the Seattle Seahawks while Casey Toohill headed east to join the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Stanford influence into the NFL wasn’t quite done though as Cameron Scarlett quickly signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Tennessee Titans.
Though unlikely to have much of an impact in terms of starting running back role with the Titans thanks to the league’s leading rusher in Derrick Henry from a year ago, Scarlett adds a complementary piece to the Tennessee backfield. And a solid complementary piece at that.
Tennessee did also draft Darrynton Evans from Appalachian State so it’s likely that Scarlett will have to battle for a RB3 type role this summer and fall.
Still, if you have someone to teach you to be a pro, it may as well be the best running back from a season ago and that league’s leading rusher.
This is a great matchup and fit for Scarlett, who ran for 840 yards on 201 carries with seven touchdowns a season ago. What makes it more intriguing, for me at least, is Scarlett’s ability out of the backfield as he caught 25 balls for 240 yards. The Titans do a great job of utilizing their pass-catching backs out of the backfield, and that’s the role that Scarlett could fill.
Congratulations, Cameron! We’re rooting for you. Grind hard and earn that spot!

Nice opportunity.
Cam Scarlett was underdeployed, aside from his pass blocking behind the TWU’s sieve, by Shaw and Pritchard. It seemed as if Shaw was protecting Cam, by exposing him to less wear and tear, while letting a smaller Bryce Love be the workhorse. After Love graduated, the TLC continued. Although this season’s QB jumble was highly inhibiting for the offense, instead of developing the offense around Scarlett’s rushing to protect QB changes, and to set up the pass, Shaw only really exploited Cam against UW, with 33 carries for 151 yards. In other games, it seemed that Cam was never in the game plan, or if he showed well in the first half, he’d be forgotten in the 2nd half.
As a senior, Scarlett was as capable as Tyler Gaffney as a senior, who’d had a better QB. As a junior, Cam Scarlett led the PAC-12 in kickoff returns and was #2 nationally. Where was that this season?
Let’s hope that Cam Scarlett stays healthy to get a decent shot as a Derrick Henry backup. Tyler Gaffney spent most of his NFL career on IR.
