The Hit (11/7/92)

That picture captures the moment that it became apparent what a force John Lynch was going to be in this game. He was about to celebrate what the SF Chronicle would call "The Hit" in the sports pages on Sunday Morning. The Hit, wasn’t just a few words about what he did a moment before that picture was captured, it was an entire article. One whole piece on this hit that John Lynch put on a USC running back as they ran an option play on a 3rd down. I was lucky enough to be in that stadium when that hit occurred, and I remember the sound, the fact that everyone in the audience could somehow feel the power of it. It was a moment that you could hear the whole crowd gasp before it turned to cheers from the Stanford faithful. Lynch was never afraid to play with emotion, and you have to wonder if the taunting he’d been subject to earlier in the game was still on his mind as he looked at the USC sideline before Ron George reached him to celebrate The Hit (it’s in the highlights, after Lynch had made a tackle on a USC receiver in the 1st quarter, the USC player got up and handed him the ball, which Lynch then threw at him in anger). The Hit… seemed to solidify the difficulty USC would have attaining what meager points they would score in this game. The hit seemed to rally the Stanford defense and bolster their confidence, which showed in their dominance of this game. And even though Lynch would later seal the deal with an interception returned for his first touchdown in a Stanford uniform, I have to wonder, did he enjoy The Hit more?
