The Stanford Cardinal athletics department gave a COVID-19 update recently, pointing out just 11 positive tests including five student-athletes who have already recovered. Interestingly enough, it also pointed out that the football program has its own count, including 11 positive results.
It’s a bit confusing as to whether or not the football program’s 11 positive results were also the entire athletic department’s 11 positive results, or if they’re in their own count altogether, which would push the total positive results to 22.
Here’s the release, with the starting point of ‘as of July 24’:
“Stanford Athletics has conducted 706 total tests on student-athletes who have returned. Of the 706 tests administered to date, 11 student-athletes have tested positive. Of the 11 positives, five have recovered and been cleared to resume activities, while six are currently isolating and following proper protocols based on current guidelines. Stanford will continue to closely monitor and conduct regular testing of any student-athlete returning to campus for voluntary activities.”
Football receives its own count, and per Stanford Athletics, “Stanford Athletics has conducted 505 tests on football student-athletes who have returned. Eleven student-athletes have tested positive. Of the 11 positives, five have recovered and been cleared to resume activities, while six are currently isolating and following proper protocols based on current guidelines. All others tested were negative. Each day, student-athletes will report their current health status, have their temperature checked and be provided additional personal protective equipment as needed. Stanford will continue to closely monitor and conduct regular testing of student-athletes throughout the season.”
Nice to have an update.
Stanford also removed the football schedule from their website after losing games to BYU, William & Mary and Notre Dame. They have nine games left on their original Pac-12 schedule and were not scheduled to play Arizona State or Utah.
If the move to a 10-game or 11-game all Pac-12 schedule happens, the Cardinal will certainly get their shot at one, or both, of those programs, with the Pac-12 title game scheduled for as early as December 4 or as late as December 19.

The 11/5 metrics have to be the football team being all the Stanford cases
They could have made it clearer but the numbers being identical are too much of a coincidence to be anything else, one would think. Hope they all recover and don’t have long lasting health impacts.

Yeah couldn't figure it out
11 total, all coming from football. 22 total, with half exactly from football.
Either way, share the sentiment — hope everyone is recovering well and nothing long-lasting!

Terrible writing
Why not just write we have 11 positive cases among athletics, and they are all accounted for within the football program, and five have recovered, etc? that’s a lot of unnecessary verbiage.

Couldn't quite figure it out myself
That’s where I was confused, for sure. 11 for football, 11 overall? Or 22 overall with 11 others?
Way too coincidental, in my opinion, for it not to be all 11 positives coming from football.

The Thing Is....This is STANFORD???!!
Who wrote this? Who proofread it? The obfuscation has to be intentional……………though awkward and for what reason?
