Happy Fourth of July Weekend, Cardinal

The Fourth of July weekend is upon us — happy Fourth, everyone at Rule of Tree!

May this weekend find you and yours happy and healthy despite all the world’s troublings this year. While we still have sports tentatively scheduled for later this fall, the time has come for my lone vacation period this year. Coinciding nicely with the Fourth’s festivities, of course, we’ll be back with regularly-scheduled programming and of course we’ll be here if anything newsworthy breaks regarding your Stanford Cardinal student-athletes.

We’re still weeks away from the majority of summer sports returning as well, and we’ll be back in time for that, don’t fret.

Until then, however, find me on a pool float with my family — resting and relaxing until we hopefully have fall sports to cover later this year.

So, stay safe, wear a mask and we’ll see you after the minor break. We’ll be back with fresh ideas, new content and exclusive previews of all the fall sports that we can discuss.

Cheers to you, loyal readers of Rule of Tree, enjoy the Fourth of July and enjoy next week!

Oh, and of course, welcome the new class of 2024 on the Stanford Sailing Team!

Enjoy your time off,

but when you return, I’d love to read your thoughts on two teams that will definitely squeeze in some kind of season (probably in the spring): the women’s soccer team and the women’s basketball team.

Women’s soccer: The forwards include arguably the best player in the history of NCAA women’s soccer in Macario, flanked by two outstanding forwards in Haley and Kuhlman. Midfielders Briede, Does, Gruebel, and incoming freshman Astrid Wheeler all have potential to be excellent. Girma may be the best defender in the country, closely followed by Pickett, who is so fun to watch. The third slot on defense, Westley, was the Gatorade Player of the Year in high school a few years ago. What’s left? Goalie — hopefully Katie Mayer, another player that was hugely fun to watch in the College Cup. Oh, and they are all coached by simply the best coach in the country.

Women’s basketball: If Haley Jones fully recovers, Tara has just a boatload of good guards: Williams, Jones, Wilson, Brown, and the Hull sisters. The bigs are equally strong in Prechtel, Dodson, and incoming freshman Brink (who may be the best shooter on the team). Forwards need the most work. Belibi needs a mid-range jumper (as does Dodson); Jerome a consistent shot, more aggressive rebounding, and toughness inside; Jump needs step back moves to free up her shot. And everyone on the team needs to improve their free throw shooting. But I’d love to see you predict how they’ll match up with South Carolina, Connecticut, Oregon, UCLA and Baylor — all potential #1 seeds in next year’s tournament.

So even if they can’t play in the fall, bring on the stories.

Consider it done!

Will do the research, and get my thoughts in line!
