Mark Madsen Hired as Stanford Assistant Coach

Johnny Dawkins has replaced one legend with another. Dick Davey's retirement after Stanford's NIT Championship run left a void on the bench, which Dawkins addressed today by tabbing Mark Madsen as the Cardinal's newest assistant coach.

The Mad Dog, who spent the last two years working toward his MBA at the Stanford GSB, certainly has a lot to learn about the ins and outs of coaching. His only experience as an assistant coach came with the NBDL's Utah Flash in 2009-10. The Flash finished 28-22, but the highlight of the season was the fake-Michael Jordan stunt pulled by Utah owner Brand Andersen. On the plus side, having accompanied Stanford on its preseason trip to Spain last summer and being around campus, he should know the players pretty well.

Three other things Madsen knows plenty about? Winning, dancing and domain name speculating. Stanford reached the NCAA Tournament in all four of his years on the Farm and he won two NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers before playing the final six years of his NBA career with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

This seems like a good hire to me. What Madsen lacks in coaching experience now he makes up for, and then some, in energy and enthusiasm. That can only help on the recruiting trail. What do you think?

After the jump, the greatest Mark Madsen highlight of them all.
