Hey, why sugarcoat it?! At Stanford we expect excellence, and that wasn’t it.
Huskies dethroned the Champs and then peed on our heads. UW is clearly the team to beat in the entire Pac12. Petersen is headed for Coach of Year.
ANYTHING positive to take away?
A few observations:
1) Clearly missing our two best cover CBs showed (Meeks, Holder) early and often; Temporary setback - they might be back, and needed, for the Palouse slingers. We get good film on Cougs in their shredding of Ducks. (Somebody dial 911 in Eugene!). UW QB Browning had a field day, and could get Player of the Week.
2) Maybe Shaw got a smack on the side of the head to open the Offense earlier to set up the run. If we get our DBs back, the Defense is in better form than the Offense. Huskies whipped our OLine last night (10 sacks!), and we won’t face a better D the rest of the way.
3) The toughest skein of our schedule is now over, and we are 3-1. Good enough. And the lone loss is to a Top Ten foe, not to an unranked schmoe team. Look at other teams that started in the Top Ten: NDAM, USC, OKLA, FLST- cough, sputter. All now with 2 losses or worse.
UW has the tougher part of their gauntlet AHEADof them. They play @OREG next week, and @UTAH later. We don’t visit SLC.
Note: Every other North team already has two losses. Big. If the Huskies make a feather mattress out of the Ducks at Autzen, Coach Helfrich might be migrating someplace south for the winter. Their Defense looked worse than hours. Paper bag time.
4) I am rooting for UW to go undefeated, which would guarantee a Playoff spot ahead of Big 12. That opens a Rose Bowl spot for either the loser of Pac12 champ game (Utah, UCLA, AZST?), or a one loss Cardinal squad ranked in Top 15. If loser of Pac12 Champ game has 3 losses (not hard to imagine), Cardinal might have a slim shot, but not if, say Utah, had one loss going into Pac12 title tiff. I think both LA schools are out of Rose Bowl contention. Utah was the chief threat for that Rose spot if UW makes Playoff, but the Utes just choked @USC.
Right now, Cardinal have fallen to Alamo or Holiday, unless we run the table from here — possible. Starts with Wazzu aerial circus in PA on Sat.
