The Stanford Cardinal set the tone to open their 2021 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Sunday with a huge win over Utah Valley, but their next test will be considerably more stiff, as they take on No. 8 seed Oklahoma State Tuesday evening in the 2nd round in San Antonio, Texas.
Stanford rolled Utah Valley 87-44 in the 1st round Sunday, with Kiana Williams’ 20 points setting the tone for the Cardinal, and Tara VanDerveer’s team hitting 10 of their first 12 3-pointers against a Utah Valley program in the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever.
Oklahoma State easily cruised past Wake Forest 84-61 in their 1st round game Sunday, and their big star is forward Natasha Mack, who had a dominant 27-point, 15-rebound performance in the win. Mack was named an AP All-American Third Team selection and ESPN and Sports Illustrated All-American Second Team honoree this season.
The Cowgirls finished third in the Big 12 this regular season and reached the semifinal round of the Big 12 Tournament before falling to West Virginia. There is some major talent in the conference and one expects Oklahoma State to be a tougher test for the Cardinal.
Still, Stanford are a No. 1 seed for a reason and they’ll look to make quick work and demoralize Oklahoma State early in this game. Stanford’s all-around team approach vs. the exploits of a star-driven lineup? This should be a fascinating game.
