Quite the shakeup in the Pac-12 Conference this weekend as both Playoff contenders, Stanford and Utah, were knocked out of contention. USC, Oregon, and Washington State climbed into the rankings following their wins. Stanford dropped to 15 in both polls and Utah dropped to 18 in both polls. Coach Shaw has conveyed that this loss is behind them and the focus in on winning the Big Game.

Well
That’s one prediction I got spot on: #15. End the season in the top ten, and it’s all good.

Honestly, after that NW loss...
…this season right now is gravy. We have a chance to win 10 games AND go to the Pac-12 championship game, with a possibility to go to the Rose Bowl.
Considering I was a student and then recent grad during the Teevens/Harris era, it’s stunning to me how that outcome is even possible in a single season, let alone a "consolation" opportunity.

Seriously
Remember quick kicks?
Remember when we had a chance to get a FG against USC and they blocked it and returned it for 7 and we lost 42-0?
Remember throwing paper airplanes during the Navy game because it sure as hell beat watching the game on the field?
Again, remember quick kicks?
Remember when the idea of actually winning a home game seemed like the fevered dream of a mad man?
We have a chance to win two games and go to the Rose Bowl. The god-damned Rose Bowl? Playoffs be damned, there is a generation of Stanford players and fans who never saw that. (And, like, a dozen generations for Cal…) And we get it as a possible consolation.

So let's see
Let’s say we beat Cal (a shootout like Oregon but without the dumb mistakes), lose to Notre Dame because they look a little better, win the championship game. That would make us 9-3 and in Rose Bowl but with a ranking below 12, so only there because the Pac-12 has to get at least one spot in a power bowl. Not a good year for the conference.

I think we can win out
Take away the dumb mistakes, and we can run the table — yes, even against ND. If the team and the coaching staff prepare this week, I don’t expect the Cal game to be close. I see shades of Stanford vs. UCLA all over again.

I pick rusty start turning into a blowout
For the first quarter and a half it might look tight and then pull away as the defense flexes its muscles. Goff and Cal D will come out swinging and put some early points to make it seem close for a half. But we pull off near the end of the half and just suck the life out of them.

Yeah
That sounds like the UCLA game. The first quarter-and-a-half looked close, then we smoked them.

Sounds like the Pac-12 is gaining some reputation with losses
Stanford is #11 now and quite frankly still in the hunt if chaos reigns. They have the chance to knock off ND head to head then hope the Big12 cannibalizes each other where a 1-loss non-oklahoma team is pitted against us and we have SOS to win.
At the end of the day, let’s Beat Cal and Retain the AXE!

perhaps some acknowledgement of a meaningful winning record against P5 teams with winning records.
Through the P-12 CG, Stanford will have played 12 of their games against P5 schools.

And 10 against Pac-12 teams
…and that has been a mutual demolition derby this year.
