Stanford Football Recruiting: Nate Herbig Recommits to Stanford

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The same day Obi Eboh dropped his commitment announcement, Nate Herbig also announced he was going to be attending Stanford in the fall. Herbig has already committed to Stanford, but this time he is in it for the long haul. Over the summer Herbig had announced his intentions of playing for Coach David Shaw and company, but in late December he decided to rescind his commitment. In the Twitter post that gave Stanford fans bad news, Herbig said "...it is the right thing to do for my future." But Stanford never backed off of his recruitment.

When the Hawaii product came to campus, for the Big Visit weekend, he received news that he had been admitted into the university. In an interview with Rivals, Andy Drukarev, Herbig said it was a relief that "all my hard work paid off" and he was also "speechless". Ever since then, I had been hearing Herbig was seriously considering coming back to Stanford.

Herbig's commitment grows Stanford class to 21 commits and gives Stanford their third offensive lineman commit. As I stated in another article, Stanford needed to grab one or two more offensive linemen because of the lack of depth. Another offensive lineman to look out for is Dylan Powell. He is supposed to officially visit Saturday and Sunday of this weekend, and then make his decision on Monday.

Since Herbig has already committed to Stanford, I have already provided a scouting report:

Herbig is a huge kid weighing in at 320 lbs and standing at 6'4". He might be a rare case of a freshman coming into college and having to lose weight. Losing weight would make him faster so he can pull and get out front of the running back. Also speed can help him make quick movements to pick up linebackers who are in a 3-4 scheme.

One great aspect about Herbig's game is his strength. As soon as he locks onto a defender he does not let go. He has great hands and knows where to place them on the defender. Also when linebackers come down from the middle of the field, once they hit Herbig they immediately stop. He hits them with so much force that they cannot run him over or even spin out of the block. Nate Herbig is an underrated talent and will be ready when he is called upon.

Her-big

But him really big

I've seen talk that his offer was contingent on him being a greyshirt candidate.

Is there any truth to those rumors?

hmm, I'll try and see if we can dig up some info

to either confirm or disprove those rumors.

During a podcast scout.com guys mentioned that Herbig's

re-commitment had to do with a greyshirt (delayed enrollment) offer from SU. Recruiting site people are not always right. However, that merits OP’s question and I second it.

Sources

I have multiple sources that deny that

Thank you

No Problem!

I've been looking around

Just checked with my source and will know more later.

Source

My source said he has not heard anything about that

Thanks for the response!

Shaw always talks about kids experiencing life just like other students

Grayshirt doesn’t seem to match up with experiencing your freshman year in the traditional manner.

Pardon my ignorance

What’s a grayshirt and how is it different from redshirt? Apart from being different colors ofc

A gray shirt refers to a player who commits to play for an NCAA division 1 football program, but agrees to pay his own way through school for a semester to preserve his eligibility. By paying his own tuition, he does not cost the school one of their limited scholarships.

From my understanding, it could also involve simple non-enrollment until after the first fall semester/quarter

SB nation put together a nifty piece on the various colors of shirts

Hopefully you find this helpful, and not spammy.

Thanks nick. Very useful
