Pac-12 Power Rankings: 9/11

Today marks our first Pac-12 power rankings of 2012. But before we get to the rankings, it's time to clear up precisely what we are ranking here. The term "power rankings" can mean several different things, but it is usually just an ordering of teams based on how good they are. Yawn. If you want that, just check out the polls and then order the rest based on their record.

But where's the fun in that? Where's the intrigue? Where's the controversy? Cue the Rule of Tree Pac-12 power rankings. These rankings will measure how well a team has done and how happy the fan base should be, with ZERO weight given to team talent or predicted success. And if you've seen our recent predictions, you know Rule of Tree is a lot better at looking back than looking forward.

So without further ado, the Pac-12 power rankings (all times Pacific, as this is the Pac-12):

Stanford in the NFL Week 1 - Luck Struggles in Debut

Cardinalalumni_medium

A weekly look at how former Stanford players are faring in the NFL.

Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts
Luck completed 23-of-45 passes for 309 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in Indianapolis' 41-21 loss to Chicago at Soldier Field. Luck also lost a fumble in a performance to learn from. "He's going to be good," Colts receiver Reggie Wayne said. "Give him time. Rome wasn't built in a day. Just sit back, watch and enjoy."

Luck's final line was similar to the one that Peyton Manning put up in his first career game (21-of-37, 302 yards, 1 TD, 3 INTS). His debut was far superior to that of fellow former Stanford No. 1 pick -- and Manning's new boss -- John Elway. While the Broncos defeated Pittsburgh 14-10 on Sept. 4, 1983, Elway completed only one of eight passes for 14 yards and an interception. He was sacked four times before exiting the game with an injury.

Elway and the Broncos traveled to Baltimore in Week 2 for a game against the Colts, who had traded Elway to the Broncos after the No. 1 pick threatened to play minor league baseball full-time. Baltimore's fans felt spurned and they let Elway know it.

"You could not hear anything in that stadium," Denver coach Dan Reeves told SI. "I've never seen anybody treated like that. He couldn't even tell the players the play in the huddle. It was horrible."

Luck should feel considerably more welcome when he takes the field next week. The Colts host the Vikings at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Stanford Cardinal Review and Scouting The USC Trojans

Scouts will tell you the 2012 Stanford Cardinal boast a roster with loads of NFL talent. Unfortunately, many of those future stars are young and inexperienced so regardless of how high their potential is, it will take time to reach it and mistakes are going to be made in the meantime.

For instance, Stanford is breaking in five first time starters on offense and there have certainly been some growing pains. Stanford's strengths the last few seasons have been (a) 3rd down conversions (51% the last 3 years), (b) time of possession (lead the country in 2010 and #5 in 2011) and (c) scoring TDs in the red zone. What worries me is that these three areas have not been nearly as solid for the first two weeks of 2012 and once the schedule gets more difficult, the margin of error disappears.

Stanford bounced back from a shaky week 1 performance to blow the doors off of an overmatched Duke team, although the stats don't necessarily show that. The Blue Devils outgained the Cardinal, possessed the ball for eight more minutes, threw for 363 yards, and ran 26 more plays (but lost 50-13). However, Stanford dominated field position thanks to four Duke turnovers and a 76 yard punt return by Drew Terrell which led to one fewer possession for Stanford's offense. Also, nearly 200 yards of Duke's production came in the 4th quarter, when the game was already out of hand and Stanford turned to the reserves on defense.
