Ted Agu's death and Brennan Scarlett

It seemed odd that Cal's athletic department let Brennan Scarlett go to Stanford without losing a year of eligibility when usually schools won't release players within the conference.

Now with this horrifying story from the Chronicle on the death of Ted Agu after an intense rope-pulling drill (which includes a photo of Scarlett holding up Agu's jersey), it may be clear why. Cal apparently lost several players over this incident, which apparently was mishandled and possibly covered up.

It certainly doesn't speak well of Sonny Dykes' program, although the trainers may not have fully understood the risks with a player with sickle-cell anemia.
