Storylines to watch at the US Army All-American Bowl

It’s a big day for Stanford’s recruiting class of 2017

With the U.S. Army All-American Bowl set to kick off in San Antonio this afternoon, I decided, with both the sheer volume of big name Stanford recruiting targets and commits playing and attending as well as its close proximity to where I currently reside (four and a half hour drive from home in Dallas), to make the trip.

You’ll see game coverage from me on our site, along with Twitter content on gameday, throughout the weekend.

I have put together some Stanford-related headlines as a primer for the pageantry and festivities that will commence after the ball leaves the tee at the Alamodome.

Can Stanford sweep the nation’s top two offensive tackles?

As of this afternoon, 247Sports’ Crystal Ball Projection listed the Cardinal as 57% percent favorites over the in-state Washington Huskies to land the nation’s top tackle in Graham-Kapowsin (WA) five star Foster Sarell.

If the top uncommitted lineman does indeed pick up the Stanford hat from the table during his live televised commitment today, offensive coordinator Mike Bloomgren may in fact lose his mind. With Sarell and his West Team line mate and Stanford commit Walker Little potentially headed to Palo Alto together, Bloomgren would have appeared to secure the best bookends in the nation for a unit that looked porous early this season.

Mills’ injured knee isn’t keeping him from being a recruiter

Davis Mills almost had the perfect ending to a feel good football story. After a preseason knee injury was declared less severe than initially thought, Mills and the Greater Atlanta Christian School Spartans made their way through an undefeated regular season before being challenged in the Georgia AAA state title game. Stanford’s quarterback of the future ended up re-aggravating the same knee injury in that game, which the Spartans lost.

Still, Mills had already committed to play in Saturday’s high school all-star showcase before the season. Following through on his commitment, he arrived late last week and began connecting with potential Stanford commits. Who has he been targeting the most? Who else but Foster Sarell. We shall see if that Mills being constantly in Sarell’s ear the entirety of this week carries any weight in Sarell’s decision tomorrow.

Check back throughout the weekend for more updates, news and notes from San Antonio.
