Card Clicks: Stanford is Still in Joe Lunardi's Field of 68

Cardclicks_medium

Somehow, Stanford is still among Joe Lunardi's Last Four In in the latest edition of Bracketology. Oregon, which beat the Cardinal head to head, has a better RPI, a better strength of schedule, and zero bad losses, is among the Last Four Out. That's preposterous. | ESPN

Avi made a good point earlier in the week

With all the drama surrounding Cal, Washington, Oregon, and USC right now, Stanford is taking a back seat to all that on the recruiting trail and may end up with the best class of the Pac-12 in the end.

That would be cool...

… but regardless, this is shaping up to be a very impressive class.

I will believe it when we see it

Tilman’s rejection makes me nervous for other LOI day bombs. Landing Shittu, Bradly, Murphy, Garnett, and Peat would make for a MONSTER class. But I will be shocked if we land 2 of the 5 and even then, we might lose out on a couple we thought were solid (e.g., Luke K.)

That poor kid. Thinks he’s got his college decision figured out and with one week to go he needs to scramble to find a team? That sucks.

The men's hoops team is being exposed on the road

… I have no idea what Lunardi is thinking. At this rate, I think Dawkins has to be on the hot seat. Coaching plays a huge role in Home vs Road performance, and his team has been pretty awful on the road. I know the Oregon State game was fun and all, but a good team shouldn’t have let it get that far…

The Wazzu loss was inexcusable

That was a team that lost to Utah, and the fact that Stanford was leading by double digits and then let it slip away in the second half is pretty bad. The loss to UW, though, I thought was a coin flip, given how schizo the Huskies have been (similar to UCLA and Arizona).

But I don’t think he’s on the hot seat yet. He’s a game and a half behind first place, and that’s something that should be taken into consideration at the end of the season if it stays that way, even if it does put Stanford in fifth place overall. That said, a road win at Haas Pavilion would do wonders for this team. It wouldn’t kill Stanford’s chances at an at-large bid with a loss, but it makes it a very, very tough road to climb without it.

I could understand a loss to UW

… just not in that fashion. It was made all the worse on the heels of the loss to WSU.

A road win at Haas would be great, but that seems like wishful thinking to me (I’d love to be proven wrong). At the very least, Dawkins’ seat should be getting a little warm. He recruited well, but with the road woes, it seems like this team is underachieving. I’d be okay with the losses if it felt like they were hard fought games where the team just came up short. That is not what these games seem like at all.

Not so sure Dawkins is in the hot seat quite yet

But if history tells us anything, it’s that Bowlsby has a close eye on the MBB team and making the tournament or even finishing in the top half of the Pac-12 (both of which are big milestones when compared to our preseason outlook) might not be enough to pacify the athletics program. We’ll see…the team has a lot to prove this week.

just signed him to an extension

so no hot seat anytime soon…also, not much was expected of this squad this year…and the supposed “best” team in the conference on has one more conference win than us and also split this road trip with a loss to Wash State.

that doesnt mean I am not still bummed and dissatisfied

by dblecard on Jan 24, 2026 4:19 PM PST up reply actions

I dunno

I read that extension as an olive branch to help him with recruiting. Would you want to sign with a lame-duck coach that can offer no guarantee that he will be there longer than a year? I’m sure they could come up with the money to buy him out if necessary.

Expectations are only part of the equation. To me it looks like many of the team’s failings could/should be addressed by coaching, and yet that hasn’t happened.
