The 2016 Stanford football recruiting class was impressive. You can click here for full scouting reports and recruiting news. Twenty-five recruits in all officially joined the Cardinal today. While many teams have drama and surprises on National Signing Day Stanford had #CardClass16 wrapped up shortly after 10am. In fact, if you work second shift or are a night owl there is a chance the entire ordeal was over before you woke up. Kicker Jet Toner's signature arrived at 10:20am pacific time wrapping up the class. There was one bit of a surprise early in the morning with Safety Andrew Pryts flipping from Penn State to Stanford.
The 2016 class has plenty of elite talent on both sides of the ball but perhaps the one player to be most excited about is 4-star quarterback K.J. Costello. If you will recall the 2015 recruiting class did not have a quarterback so signing a great QB in the 2016 class was a priority. Costello had offers from both Michigan and USC but committed to Stanford back in March but could not make it official until this morning.
Costello is a 6'5" 220 pounder ranked as one of the best pro-style quarterbacks in the nation. Costello is an Army All-American, an Elite 11 finalist and holds 19 school records at Santa Margarita Catholic high school. Stanford was keen on Costello for quite some time. According to SB Nation:
"Costello visited Stanford at least four times, most recently Jan. 24, according to his 247Sports timeline page. He visited USC at least three times, most recently March 7. Michigan offered last May, and he took a visit soon after in June.
In the end, Stanford has been all-in on Costello for some time, even electing to not sign a quarterback in last year's recruiting class. That move sent a clear message about how much the Cardinal wanted Costello, but also about playing time. And Stanford signed only two combined QBs in the 2013 and 2014 cycles. USC signed two elite prospects last year in Sam Darnold and Ricky Town."
