Where will Austin Hooper play in 2020?

Former Cardinal, Austin Hooper, is creating a lot of buzz leading up to free agency later this March.

The standout tight end has held a key role in the Atlanta Falcons’ offense during his first four years. In fact, Hooper was a key contributor during their Super Bowl appearance where he caught a touchdown pass. He has progressed each of his four years, putting up impressive numbers in 2019 with nearly 800 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns. His numbers ranked in the top seven in the NFL respectively in which he earned a spot in his second Pro Bowl.

Why Hooper’s price is high:

The 25 year-old is a top-tier target for many teams. Hooper is in the prime of his career and will likely be one of the highest-paid tight ends. The tight end is very efficient, catching 77% of passes thrown his way throughout his career. On top of this, he is great in the red zone. Majority of Hooper’s touchdowns came within 20 yards and can run block effectively with his wide frame. Although he is not the fastest tight end, his bigger, powerful body benefits him after the catch.

Considering this, Hooper will draw interest from plenty of teams, but here are the most likely:

Redskins:

Washington recently released tight end Jordan Reed and has 60 million in cap room this offseason, allowing for the opportunity to spend. The Redskins have a young team, a rising quarterback, and a high draft pick in the upcoming draft. Therefore, Hooper would certainly fit and accelerate what is building in D.C.

Packers:

Like the Redskins, the Packers will not be bringing back their tight end. With no more Jimmy Graham, they will have a hole at the tight end spot. Hooper could add depth to Aaron Rodgers’ receiving core and would complement wide receiver Devante Adams well. Hooper might be the offensive piece the Packers have been needing to get back to a Super Bowl.

Bears:

The Bears recently spent significant money on tight end Trey Burton in 2018’s free agency and have not seen the production they anticipated from him. The Bears have one of the better defenses in the league, but seek to upgrade their offense. This is especially important if they want to give Trubisky, or whoever their quarterback is next year, some help.

Wherever the former Stanford product lands, there is no excuse for him to slow down his production and continue to represent the excellent brand of Stanford tight ends.
