It's Still Early Stanford Bowl Projection Update

Where will Stepfan Taylor and the Cardinal be bowling this season? Perhaps in Taylor's native Texas.

Stanford dropped a spot in this week's BCS Rankings, but rose three spots to No. 11 in the latest SB Nation BlogPoll Top 25. (The latter doesn't factor into the former--yet.) Don't go making hotel reservations, but here's where the experts currently project Stanford to play this postseason.

CBS Sports: Valero Alamo Bowl, vs. Oklahoma State

CBS projects Oregon and Alabama in the National Championship Game and has Boise State sliding into spot previously reserved for the Pac-10 runner-up in the Rose Bowl. That leaves Stanford headed to San Antonio to play the Big 12's third place team, the Cowboys.

Mark Schlabach, ESPN: Valero Alamo Bowl, vs. Oklahoma

Schlabach has Oregon and Boise State squaring off in the National Championship Game and predicts TCU will nab a Rose Bowl berth to play Michigan State. Of course, Oklahoma, which was ranked No. 1 in the BCS standings before last week's loss to Missouri, defeated Stanford in last season's Sun Bowl.

Andrea Adelson, ESPN: Rose Bowl, vs. Michigan State

Now we're talking! Like Schlabach, Adelson projects Oregon and Boise State in the title game. She also projects undefeated TCU to play Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, which would leave the Rose Bowl free to select the Cardinal.

Scout: Valero Alamo Bowl, vs. Missouri

Scout projects Boise State and Alama in the National Championship Game and a rematch of last year's Rose Bowl between Oregon and Ohio State in Pasadena.

Again, it's early. While none of these experts is expecting Stanford to finish anything other than second in the Pac-10, a third-place finish would result in a trip to San Diego for the Holiday Bowl. A fourth-place finish would send Stanford back to El Paso for the Sun Bowl.

From a prestige perspective, the Alamo bowl seems fine...

… from an attendance perspective, it seems like a disaster. Going from the Bay Area to El Paso last year wasn’t very interesting. Going to San Antonio also isn’t terribly attractive. Rose or Holiday bowls though? Stanford doesn’t travel all that well, but I’d be willing to bet you will get a lot of interested fans for either of those games.

Essentially

Each and every loss from here to the end of the season lowers us a notch. I think the scenarios you have assume us “winning out.”

That's right.

Second-place in the conference is still wide open. It seems there’s a big drop off in prestige from the Rose Bowl to the Alamo Bowl. As a fan, I’d much rather go to the Holiday Bowl.
