National Signing Day Open Thread
Nov. 30, 1988 was Ice Cube's "Good Day." February 1, 2026 is shaping up to be a great day for Stanford football. David Shaw and the Cardinal coaching staff have already put together an impressive recruiting class. If a few more undecided prospects choose Stanford during today's National Signing Day festivities, the class could be one of the highest rated in school history.
Stanford is still in the running for several top recruits, including OL Andrus Peat, OL Kyle Murphy, DT Aziz Shittu, S Zach Hoffpauir, and maybe even QB Jameis Winston, who verbally committed to Florida State, but recently learned that he was admitted to Stanford.

Jameis Winston
Would love to grab him
Stanford allowing players to play both football and baseball has paid dividends.
Noor Davis is playing both and this might help us grab Winston

We've gotten 15 LOI - nearly all of our verbal commits
Check Rivals or Stanford Football on Twitter for a detailed list. We also got one surprise switch, Michael Rector (3 star WR) who flipped from UW. Andrus Peat will announce sometime around 10:30.

Thanks
I’ve been on ESPN and it lists all the players as verbally committed and not signed as of now.

Apparently, we flipped 3 star S Zach Hoffpauir from Cal
in the wake of the Lupoi/Kiesau implosion. Hate to take advantage of a rival in a moment of weakness, but we really need backfield depth.

Stanford Football could just be playing coy
But it sounds like we might have gotten an LOI from at least one of the Big Three (Murphy, Peat, and Shittu).

Stanford Donors/Fans/Alumni: NLI signees are awesome. But, they are still recruits until the fall. Please do not contact them via twitter/FB

Awesome
Peat was the one I thought we would miss on. Shittu seems like a solid Stanford lean, and hopefully Murphy sees what we’re building here on the Farm. Although if he does want playing time as a true freshman, he might be a little alarmed by the number of quality O-line recruits we’re pulling in.

Great day so far for Stanford
Shittu and Kyle Murphy signing would make for an amazing finish.

USC insiders think Kyle Murphy —→ SC.

They were wrong
Murphy just committed to Stanford.
RT @bcondotta: Crazy OL signings for Stanford as Kyle Murphy commits there. 3 5-star OLs in its class.

If I were a top 2013 QB recruit
I would be beating a path to Stanford’s door right about now.

heck, Jameis Winston THIS YEAR is apparently still considering Stanford
And if you’re Barry Sanders, aren’t you just incredibly happy with your choice right now? Peat, Murphy, and Garnett… yeesh!

Ultra-JumboCat?
Next season’s version of the Wildcat/WildGaff/Sequoia/whatever you call it: nothing but O-lineman on the field, and the one who runs the best gets to carry the ball.
Good way to make sure they all get at least some PT.

- recruiting class in the nation.
Looks like Josh Garnett was prescient. Or, you know, David Shaw told him who was coming.

Some of the choices really came down to the wire, apparently. Peat claims he didn’t really decide until late last night and wasn’t totally sure until earlier this morning:

Amazing Day
Glad to see Shaw and co. can at least recruit at a level Stanford never has before..

I think he’s a great coach and will do wonders, it’s just yet to be seen. I give him a ton of credit for last season, but now he has to prove he can shape his own team. I get he had a part in it all, but Stanford last season was mainly Harbaugh’s roster.
by TheFreakSFG on Feb 1, 2026 3:15 PM PST up reply actions
that's fair
I guess I would argue that “at least” makes it seem like recruiting ability isn’t all that important, when really it’s a huge part of what makes a successful coach at the college level.
In my eyes, this class and what it says of Shaw is a big reason why he got the job over Roman or Fangio— you could make arguments that those guys might have been better fits to coach the team at the time, but Shaw hands down seemed likely to be the best recruiter of the bunch

we will get a top qb
this recruiting class all but assures as that we will be able to get a 5 star guy next class. pretty stoked.

Still in on a pretty good one this year...
… which is pretty nuts considering that Stanford wasn’t actively pursuing any QBs this time around.
by RickeySteals on Feb 1, 2026 3:16 PM PST up reply actions
I'm most struck by the amazing success rate
Of guys Stanford really targeted, did we lose out on any? Peat, Murphy, Shittu, Garnett, Sanders… some of them came down to the wire, but in the end Stanford won out against some titans of the college football world (FSU, USC, Nebraska) and family ties (Peat choosing Stanford over Nebraska, Sanders choosing Stanford over OK State).

Wow
NSD isn’t the greatest day to be on vacation w/o regular access to Twitter, but what a great surprise to come back to. Incredible day for Stanford. Winston would be icing on the cake, but I feel pretty happy about our QB situation. If he goes to FSU — or MLB — we won’t have any problem attracting a top-notch QB in next year’s class.

Shaw: Fanaika will take his Mormon mission after completely high school
Sounds like we may not see him in action until 2015, depending on whether he is redshirted his first year or not.

That could be a good thing...
… frees up another scholarship for two years, bolsters the 2015 class and he’ll be two years more mature than everyone else starting out.
by RickeySteals on Feb 1, 2026 4:27 PM PST up reply actions
This is generally how I see it. I think it tends to help the kids who go on missions at the college level because they come back and it’s like they’ve had two years to grow and mature, and then they’re 20 year old freshmen competing with 18 year olds.
(on the flip side, you could argue that they’re rusty from being away from football for a couple of years… depends on how much football work they’re able to do while away, I guess).
