Off to a 7-0 start with six wins over ranked foes, the Stanford baseball team earned its first No. 1 ranking since 2004. | Palo Alto Daily News

Former Stanford baseball player Jake Mosbacher says the Vanderbilt and Texas teams the Cardinal swept were "massively overrated" and we should temper our expectations of Mark Marquess's squad just a bit. The team is for real, but hold off on your flight reservations for Omaha. | The Stanford Daily

I caught the beginning of Stanford's 13-run inning Sunday on KZSU, went out to grab lunch, and came back in time to hear the rest. Play-by-play man David Lombardi compiled the highlights from that frame for your listening pleasure. Good stuff. | YouTube

"They all did some good things and some not-so-good things," David Shaw said of the five quarterbacks competing to replace Andrew Luck on the first day of spring practice. In addition to Shayne Skov, who is recovering from knee surgery and serving a suspension for his DUI charge, Ty Montgomery (hand) and Anthony Wilkerson (leg) will miss all of spring practice. | SF Chronicle

David DeCastro could be a good fit in Dallas. Cowboys offensive line coach Bill Callahan worked with Stanford o-line coach Mike Bloomgren when both were assistants with the Jets. | Star-Telegram

The UConn women's basketball team has suffered back-to-back home losses for the first time since 1993. No. 1 Baylor survived a tough test at Texas A&M. A loss would've put Stanford in position to move up to No. 1 with a win over Cal. | Swish Appeal

I wouldn't say the teams were "massively" overrated

But they definitely weren’t as good as advertised by Baseball America and the Coaches. The 13-run inning against Stanford had all freshmen pitchers on the mound for Texas, and Vandy, who could never find a beat last weekend, was simply being outhit by the Cardinal (Vandy scores a run, Stanford scores three). It certainly doesn’t help Stanford’s case that UT is now 2-5 and Vandy was swept in two consecutive weekends out here on the west coast (against Oregon this past weekend)

I do agree with him, though, that no one should be booking a flight to Omaha yet. That game against UOP last Tuesday showed that after Appel/Mooneyham/Hochstetter, there is a significant drop-off in pitching, especially surprising considering how well AJ Vanegas was last year. I’m not entirely confident in our closers yet, either.

We’ll definitely know more about this team when they face #5 Rice in a few weeks. Rice is a defensive minded team, and Stanford is an all-out offensive blitz.

Should be a great series with the Owls.

Just finished watching the Cardinal dust off UC Davis. 8-0!
