Trent Johnson
Why does it not surprise me that Johnson maneuvered a new head coaching gig before he was forced out at LSU? Interesting to see what he can do with TCU. My guess is not much. We all know his strengths don’t lie in recruiting, and watching him coach for several years at Stanford (including, for me, on the court at the NCAA First Round loss to Mississippi State while covering it for the Daily. That one stung), I think we also know that his coaching isn’t all that strong, either.

The SEC is funny
The quality of athlete in basketball, at least outside of Kentucky and maybe Florida, isn’t that spectacular. I get the feeling that the athletes that Johnson wanted were instead opting for football. He put all his eggs in a basket hoping to get even better athletes at LSU compared to Stanford, only to realize that the school is football first in men’s sports and that he couldn’t get the guys he wanted who instead wanted the fame of football.
Johnson prospered at Nevada because he got good athletes who weren’t hampered by academic standards. At Stanford, he had to deal with admissions. At LSU, he had to deal with football. I’m not surprised he’s moving on to TCU, where he can perhaps build up a team in a major league without being hampered too much by academics or football’s priority. It sounds like it’s a very similar position to what he had at Nevada.

Hm, interesting thoughts. So you don’t think the TCU football team will get in the way? I think you’re right that he wanted to go somewhere that would accommodate his style more, but I think he was also trying to stay one step ahead of his inevitable firing at LSU, so that was definitely a factor in his decision. But he seems to want to do things on his terms, so he probably also weighed those factors you bring up about the types of athletes he can recruit.

There are plenty of good basketball players in SEC country
More to the point, basketball players seem to be more willing to ship themselves over vast distances to play.
Trent Johnson failed at LSU because he’s a mediocre coach. He’ll fail at TCU for the same reason.
