We're Going Bowling!

OK, so technically Stanford doesn't know where it's going until next Sunday, but the chances of heading to Glendale for the Fiesta Bowl are highly plausible.  If not, to San Antonio we go (not a bad city at all).

Use this thread to discuss bowl games, the regular season in general, and the Notre Dame win.

Congrats, Stanford!  You're 11-1 for two consecutive seasons for the first time in the school's 120 year history!

Well that was fun!

Not so fun? Watching Lane Kiffin keep Barkley out there for the whole game.

I know they're rivals and all

But keeping your starter out there on a 50-point blowout (during which at one point you went for TWO), isn’t that just excessive?

Oh well. Sucks for Larry Scott. His best Southern team is ineligible and his South Champion is probably going to bowl ineligible after next week, with the team headed by a lame-duck head coach on his way out. If Utah would have beaten CU, the conference would have seven bowl teams with the Utes in the Championship Game Now it’s probably going to be six, and two most likely are going to a BCS bowl while the rest are either 6-6 or have a losing conference record (with the exception of UW).

Hmm...

If Virginia Tech wins next week vs. Clemson, it’ll likely keep Stanford out of the Top 4, which is a joke.

Va Tech is definitely way over ranked, but it doesn’t really matter much at this point, as Stanford is almost certainly headed to a BCS bowl, with an Oklahoma State or VT loss making it a done deal.

yeah

I find it kind of hard to believe that even if Stanford isn’t in the top 4, there wouldn’t be a spot for the Andrew Luck hype machine at one of the BCS bowls.

Idolizing Robb Nen since 2002...

VTech has a pretty good resume

If they beat Clemson (which is imploding).

That said, there is some chance Stanford will be ahead of VTech. The results this week have been highly favorable for Stanford, with Arizona, Cal, Colorado and San Jose St winning (a Duke win would have the cherry of the cake). That, together with the 3-1 in SEC Vs ACC, and Notre Dame being higher ranked than Virginia, will boost Stanford to #4 tomorrow with high likelihood (by a hair).
I don’t think it’ll be enough to withstand VTech beating Clemson, but there is a chance.

Coaches poll is out

Stanford up to #4. But more importantly, the difference with VTech decreased from 0.0135 to 0.0014. In Sagarin, Stanford went from #11 to #10, and VTech dropped from #18 to #19 (this is their worst ranking, so it doesn’t count).

I thought Stanford might overtake VTech in the BCS by a hair because of the bump in the computers. But I expected the humans to knock Stanford a tad (which they did in the AP poll).
I now think Stanford will be #4 in the BCS by a pretty decent margin. But probably, still not enough if VTech wins the ACC.

As an aside note, if Stanford doesn’t get a BCS berth, the Pac-12 is going to have a very good record in the bowls!

Luck had a good game, but didn't do enough to win the Heisman...

he is still behind Richardson….with that being said…RGIII can still win it with a great performance next week against Texas.

With a huge lead!

Arizona’s win, along with Cal, Colorado and San Jose st were key.

It might be juuuust enough to hold VTech off if they beat Clemson :o)

Almost forget.
The ACC debacle against Georgia, Vanderbilt and South Florida also helped in VTech’s demise!

Michigan is #16

And they need to get to #14 for an at-large berth.
After the championship games they’ll pass Georgia and Wisconsin/MSU, but if Baylor beats Texas, they might end up #15.

That would all but assure BCS for Stanford in the case they end up #5.

Michigan in the BCS would be a miscarriage of justice...

…and would pretty much end the BCS system.

What happens to Michigan if OU beats OkSt

would be a travesty for Michigan to take OkSt’s at large slot.

Historic successes for Stanford

Prior to 2010, Stanford had only had three 10-win seasons in its history. Last year, the Cardinal recorded its first season with 11 or more wins, finishing 12-1. Now Stanford has ended the regular season at 11-1 and has a chance to win a new year’s bowl. What’s more, the team has won 31 games in a three-year span starting with the 2009 season.

Toby Gerhart and Andrew Luck have been the two players who keyed an era of Stanford football success like none other. Although neither has won a Heisman Trophy, each player finished second over the past two years, and Luck may yet win the top prize.

I look forward to a fantastic finish to a terrific season in early January 2012!

Yeah...

… a couple of times during the Notre Dame game I had to remind myself - I’m watching a Stanford team beat its opponent handily to earn its eleventh win, and that team is so good that it seems weird that they aren’t putting up more points. When have I ever been able to say that before (and will I ever be able to say that again)?

Enjoy the ride here… it is a rare and pretty amazing thing we’ve witnessed this season.
