Stanford Men’s Soccer: The Cardinal starts off hot

It was only an exhibition match but Stanford looked great

Track and Field: Stanford Invitational Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Stanford men’s soccer team came out full steam ahead with a 5-0 win in their exhibition match against Sacramento State on Saturday, August 13.

Now let’s not get too excited about an exhibition match, but while we pump the brakes on a game against Sacramento State there are a few things to take away from the win.

The first and foremost is that it does not look like the Cardinal have lost a step. This team needed to win convincingly against a lesser opponent to prove they have not taken a step backwards and they did just that. Not only that but the core guys on the team, Foster Langsdorf and Corey Baird who combined for three goals and two assists. The older centerpieces of this offense needed to hit the ground running to pick up where they left off offensively last season. The push from them showed as the team ended the day with 15 shots, 10 of which were on goal. Jared Gilbey also scored in his first game with the Stanford, some smart writer mentioned him going into the season, which is a promising start from the youth on this team.

The other big thing to look at was how strong the defensive unit was as a whole. They only allowed three shots on goal the entire match and stifled any attempt at an offensive push by Sacramento. While the downside was that the goaltender never got a real test this was a great start on all levels for the Cardinal.
