Stanford Baseball Postseason Guide
Cal State Fullerton won't get another crack at Stanford after last night's classic, not this season anyway. Illinois, the No. 4 seed in the Fullerton Regional, rallied to beat the host Titans in this afternoon's elimination game, 7-5. If Stanford wins tonight, it will advance to play North Carolina, which swept its Regional, in next weekend's Super Regionals. If Illinois wins, the teams will meet again tomorrow night. Go Stanford!

Stanford = 4.5 run fave
Did IL burn through their best pitchers already?
by Cardinal&Orange; on Jun 5, 2025 7:47 PM PDT reply actions
They definitely burned through their best starters.
Tonight’s starter gave up 22 ER in 25.1 innings and only made four starts. The bullpen is actually in decent shape.
by Scott Allen on Jun 5, 2025 8:15 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, they're not very deep on the mound
It took them 25 pitches to get three outs, and both hits were doubles. Stanford’s already up 1-0 in the middle of the first.
by RedOscar on Jun 5, 2025 8:20 PM PDT up reply actions
That was crushed.
Clowe now 2-for-2 with a 2B and a two-run homer. Illinois could be dipping into the bullpen sooner rather than later.

Some unfortunate news out of Texas
Both TCU and Rice have been eliminated. Cal, playing in the Houston regional, if it wins twice against Baylor, will host a Super Regional since only Dallas Baptist and Oral Roberts remained in the Ft. Worth regional, the two lowest seeds in that regional.
Stanford, if it wins, will have to travel to Chapel Hill, NC for the Super Regional since UNC won its regional as the #3 seed in the tournament. Only UCLA (to #1 Virginia) and Oregon State (to #6 Vandy) will travel comparable distances for their Super Regionals if they win. Of all the teams left in the tournament, Cal and Baylor have by far the easiest route to the CWS. UCLA and Stanford have by far the most difficult.
In somewhat unrelated news, Clemson and defending champs South Carolina could end up meeting in the Super Regional in a strange coincidence that will surely have some very interesting games if Clemson can find a way to win tomorrow.

The trip to Chapel Hill will be tough.
I didn’t realize the Tar Heels were so dominant (34-3) at home.

Zerrusen done with two outs in the 3rd.
4-0 Stanford with a chance for more.

Oh my gosh, that Stanford ESPN logo
I don’t know whether to be disgusted or amused by it.
by RedOscar on Jun 5, 2025 8:54 PM PDT reply actions
Haha, I took a picture of it last night.
Love the ESPNU spinning school logos.

Genius from ESPN
“His goal, obviously, is to not let Illinois score any runs…”
Brilliant

Like I tweeted last night...
Turn off Morgan Ensberg and turn on KZSU.

Dang late games
I probably won’t know the outcome until tomorrow morning — workday tomorrow and all that.
Don’t trust Stanford to hold a lead against these Comeback Kids either, if they even still have one, the way this inning (4th) is going.

I'm struggling to stay awake.
Morgan Ensberg isn’t helping.

Not stimulated by
his numerous and flailing attempts to describe the precipitation?

Illinois mounting a comeback
Two runs in the past two innings and a runner on third here in the fourth.
by RedOscar on Jun 5, 2025 9:26 PM PDT reply actions
Comeback Kids is right.
They were down 4-1 in the ninth in the first game of the Big Ten tournament, 4-1 in today’s elimination game against Fullerton, and 5-0 tonight. Make it stop, Stanford.
by Scott Allen on Jun 5, 2025 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh wow
Irvine beat the Bruins at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins should never have been hosting a regional in the first place, but that’s really surprising that they ended up losing their own home regional, once against USF and again tonight.

Yeah, wouldn't have guessed they'd be the first Pac-10 team eliminated.
Gerrit Cole will be over it by tomorrow night.
by Scott Allen on Jun 5, 2025 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions
I would have put them as the second team out
After Cal. Then Rice laid an egg in its regional, paving the way for Cal.
UCLA was not the dominant team that they were last year. They stumbled into the Pac-10 championship after OSU had a late-season meltdown and ASU got erratic in the middle of the season.

Sandbrink has thrown ~70 pitches
and at least 50 tosses to 1st.
by Cardinal&Orange; on Jun 5, 2025 9:50 PM PDT reply actions
That's actually not that unusual for him
I wouldn’t be surprised to see a sixth or seventh inning switch to Vanegas or Snodgress, or if 9 is getting really desperate, Talt or Bloom.
by RedOscar on Jun 5, 2025 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions
OMGosh, Ben Clowe
I have not seen that at all this year from him.
Or any of the past four years, for that matter.
by RedOscar on Jun 5, 2025 10:01 PM PDT reply actions
Holy Clowe!
Sorry, couldn’t resist.
Needs to work on his HR “trot,” though. More like a sprint now.
by Cardinal&Orange; on Jun 5, 2025 10:01 PM PDT reply actions
Hmm, that's interesting
Stanford’s only had one error through 2.6 innings? And that error was Piscotty’s throw earlier tonight? That’s surprising, I must admit.

I can’t think of any dazzling defensive plays off the top of my head, but the defense has been solid all weekend.

9 brought them ready to play
I think he told them to remember last year’s disastrous affair at Fullerton against inferior teams.
by RedOscar on Jun 5, 2025 10:17 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm assuming that was a Single E7 RBI there
Stanford’s up 9-2 now. Much more comfortable lead than was there in the fourth inning.
by RedOscar on Jun 5, 2025 10:15 PM PDT reply actions
I think this is the most homers that Stanford has had in a game all year
It may be the most home runs they’ve had in a single game in the past two years, in fact.

"That ball was hit into the future." - Morgan Ensberg
All is forgiven. And with that, I think I’m headed to bed.
by Scott Allen on Jun 5, 2025 10:20 PM PDT reply actions
I would ask why this game is so late
Even I’m growing weary of this game at 10:20 at night. But the alternative was to play earlier in the day and not have the game televised at all, so I guess there was a decent tradeoff.
by RedOscar on Jun 5, 2025 10:22 PM PDT up reply actions
Me too.
Keep it up, Cardinal. Don’t want to wake up and see IL rallied for 10 runs or whatever they end up needing.
by Cardinal&Orange; on Jun 5, 2025 10:23 PM PDT up reply actions
Great camera work there, ESPN [sarcasm]
Hidden right behind the pole.
by RedOscar on Jun 5, 2025 10:21 PM PDT reply actions
I'll take the late game
If it ends like this—and I can see it in HD in Chicago, like I can now. New football TV contract can’t show up soon enough, and hopefully they keep late games so we get national television.
by michmill on Jun 5, 2025 10:23 PM PDT reply actions
I'm not sure that the TV contract will extend to postseason
It may for regional play in the future, but I’m not 100% sure. Depends on how ESPN negotiated postseason play with the NCAA. If the Big Ten were good in baseball, we may have been able to tell if one of the teams had managed to host a regional.
by RedOscar on Jun 5, 2025 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions
Steady light rain now
Stanford leading 12-2 in the top of the eighth. Game could be called if the field gets any wetter since we’re beyond the fifth now.
by RedOscar on Jun 5, 2025 10:37 PM PDT reply actions
Mosbacher brings in a run as PH
RBI triple in the top of the ninth gives Stanford a 13-2 lead.
by RedOscar on Jun 5, 2025 10:54 PM PDT reply actions
And that's it!
Stanford, in its first ever meeting against Illinois, defeats the Illini 14-2 to win the Regional. Stanford will play North Carolina next weekend in Chapel Hill at a TBD time.
