Stanford fans missing a great show
I just drifted over hear from A2Q to post this. I love your guy's "deal." I dig the band, I love the offense, I like Luck, and I like your coach. If I were a guy living around Palo Alto (sp?) I would frequent Stanford games... too bad the same thing can't be said for your fan base.
Seriously guys, all the best, win out and go to the Fiesta, you deserve it. But your local fans suck and need a kick in the pants for not showing up to support a really great Cardinal team. Stuff like this is why Harbaugh will probably be coaching the Cowboys next year, and I'm not so sure you guys can keep this going without him... not yet anyways

Thanks for your contribution. I’ll be sure to take time out of my day to go hand out fliers.

If Harbaugh goes to the Cowboys I will want to shoot myself in the face.
Own the blame Mr Wilson.

But his leaving is inevitable
I looked it up. The record for years coaching Stanford football is 9, shared by John Ralston when I was a freshman at Stanford and Pop Warner in the 20’s and 30’s. Bill Walsh only lasted 2 years his first time before the NFL hussied him away from us.
Of course, except for Walsh, any coaches who dared to leave Stanford for greater fame and fortune elsewhere had limited success, for football or basketball. Still I have trouble seeing either Harbaugh or Dawkins as the sort to stay here 20 years just because he likes the program and the location. Everyone wants their shot at the greatest games in their sport. It’s the unusual man like Joe Paterno who decides he likes what he already has better.

Learning to be glad for the moment
Mentioning John Ralston made me remember that during my time at Stanford there was one coach who hung around for 20 years, Howie Dallmar. He coached Stanford basketball for 21 years because he was a hero for Stanford’s national championship team in 1942. Oh, that was awful. Awful recruiting, awful games, maybe more awful than I ever knew.
If you could be with Angelina Jolie (or whomever you’d rather have) for a day of anything you want, who wouldn’t take it? Yes, I’d want more, but if the alternative is 20 years of Howie Dallmar, give me the great coach for even one year.

First on my list
How serious is the talk of him leaving this year?
As a Cowboys fan, I would love to see him in Big D. I think he has the toughness to get rid of the prima donna attitude lingering inside the clubhouse.
But….
If he doesn’t head to the NFL, I pray he doesn’t go the Wolverines. They have been talking about him on sports radio here in Detroit for over a year. Most of their fans hoped for sanctions against them inorder to pave the way for RichRods firing and allow them to go after Harbaugh. They feel it’s the only logical choice for him. Man, I hate them!
I hope we meet in the Rose Bowl. Go Spartans!

Ted Miller said about the same thing
last night on his blog for espn.com. I don’t know why. Stanford is the smallest school in the conference. Its attendance will always reflect that, as it always has. Why doesn’t the beat writer for the PAC-10 understand that?
Comments to Miller’s criticism pointed out that and other facts, how many Stanford students come from somewhere other than the Bay Area and return there as alumni, how local fans might not embrace a team from a school they wouldn’t be able to attend.
That was straightforward, but then Cal fans and Oregon fans showed up as well, offering their own gentle opinion as the one here, “Stanford fans suck!” Well, being small in number isn’t a measure of quality. Still that’s what fans of other schools say, “You were nothing before Harbaugh! You’ll be nothing when he leaves once he realizes you suck!”
I used to argue with people like that. It doesn’t do any good.

It is complicated...
… if I have time later today I’ll try to write up my thoughts in more detail. I think there are a number of factors affecting attendance - including the awfulness of the pre-Harbaugh era, the local press and the failings of the athletic department’s marketing.
I think Stanford can build itself up to have a rabid fanbase, but it will take a significant amount of time (like, a decade) and I don’t think anyone wants to stick around that long…
