Stanford Will Play Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl

More photos » Paul Sakuma - AP

Andrew Luck and the Cardinal will travel to Miami to play Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 3.

The Stanford football team will take its talents to South Beach and play Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 3. Orange Bowl officials had their pick between Stanford, which finished fourth in the final BCS standings, and Big East champion UConn. While the Huskies would have likely brought more fans to Miami, the Cardinal is a far superior team and should attract a larger television viewing audience.

Virginia Tech lost its highly anticipated season opener to Boise State and suffered a shocking defeat at home one week later to James Madison. Led by senior quarterback Tyrod Taylor, the Hokies rallied to win their final 11 games, including Saturday's ACC Championship against Florida State.

Stay tuned for more.

mmm......I love Oranges............

Good thing about this game……..is that they get it on a day all to themselves.

That’ll help ratings.

I’m glad the Cardinal were rewarded properly for their outstanding season!

The score dictated they pass

Would have been able to...

travel to Glendale, L.A., or even San Antonio. But can’t make this trip. Not happy.

It is a damned impressive achievement...

… and the team should be incredibly proud of what they’ve done…

… but this is far to expensive for most west coast Stanford fans. I’ve been looking at it and there aren’t many airlines that fly direct from the bay area to Miami (or Ft. Lauderdale). Flights will run a minimum of $700. Plus hotel/transportation. Plus a game ticket…

Sigh… oh well - I guess I’ll just have to watch it amongst friends here at home…

If you look hard enough and are willing to take off work until Thursday morning, there are flights on JetBlue that leave on the Friday before (the Eve) and return Wednesday to the Bay Area for under $400, although you may be in the air for the turn of the clock at midnight. I know that there are some young alums/students trying to buy in bulk some tickets for flights via a Facebook campaign to try and bring down the air costs.

Barring that, if you were to leave the Bay Area on the 1st or 2nd, and were to return the 4th, the cheapest I saw was $603 from the travel agency that is coordinating the official transportation packages for the athletic department. Last night was the last night that Southwest offered its lowest prices for flights to Ft. Lauderdale leaving the 1st or 2nd, meaning its base price for tickets one-way is now $400.

AZ would've been doable

FL is not.

Still, now that I’ll also have to watch on TV, VA Tech is a more interesting matchup than taking on OK again (although it would’ve been nice to stomp on them this year instead of narrowly missing because our QB couldn’t throw a decent pass more than 5 yards).

i'm very happy that stanford is in the orange

and not uconn.

i like you guys. harbaugh is a fantastic coach and IMO Luck is the best QB in the nation. should be a very good game.

I'm at least glad to see

that there isn’t going to be a repeat of last year’s matchup. That would have been kind of lame— I mean, there are, what, 120 D-IA teams? To play the same one in consecutive bowls seems… off.
