Card Clicks: Moose Martin Helps Stanford's Younger Players Along

Dawkins' seat is already pretty hot
But I think Zimmerman makes a great point. We’re willing to overlook basketball’s misgivings now because football is so good AND is extending into January—taking up half of the basketball season and distracting fans from the basketball woes.

Cycles
Just as we were more willing to overlook the football team’s struggles in the early aughts while the men’s and women’s basketball team’s thrived…
The Stanford football team probably won’t be a regular BCS contender without Luck, but the program is in good shape. This is a make or break year for Dawkins.

If that's true, BBall may not need to perform for years
…If David Shaw can keep the engine chugging. It’s true that I would care more about Cal fan ribbing during bball season if our football wasn’t vastly superior. A lot can be forgiven about the whole AD, if the football team is going to a BCS.

Agreed...
There was always the perception that a Stanford football team just couldn’t hang with the big boys - it was impossible to develop a program that would compete at a high level year after year (even Willingham’s teams tended to alternate good years and bad). That has (for the most part) been put to rest.
Montgomery (and even Johnson) showed long ago that basketball could sustain that kind of success. The fact that it has been done before should mean that Dawkins gets a shorter leash. Once you know what is possible, it becomes even more difficult to accept failure. So yeah, I think (and hope) that this is a make or break year for him, to the point where even mediocrity (say, a .500 record or the NIT tourney) isn’t enough.

I'm willing to put up with a NIT postseason
Or even a above .500 record and being a bubble team relegated to the CBI. But having a losing overall record or finishing lower than 6th in the conference is probably not going to cut it for a lot of supporters.
