Track and field
This is very tardy, but it hasn’t been recorded here and should have been. Last weekend was a pretty good weekend for Stanford track and field athletes, undergraduates and alumni. Most notable and the subject of a nice piece on the official site, is undergraduate Chris Deriick’s fifth place in 13:19.58 in the Millrose Games 5,000 behind Bernard Lagat with an American (indoor) record 13:07.15, the phenonomenal Arizona freshman Lawi Lalang with a college record 13:08.28 and two other Kenyan collegians. Derrick now stands (indoors) third among Americans, fifth among collegians, and second among American collegians; also, indoors and out, 10th collegian, fifth American collegian. In the Wanamaker mile in that Millrose meet alum Garrett Heath was third in a PR 3:55.24. Lauren Centrowitz was way back in 8th in the women’s 1500 but nevertheless in a good PR 4:11.97.
In Fayettevile, Arkansas, in the USATF Classic, a couple of alumni distinguished themselves. Jill Camarena-William added an inch to her American indoor shot record —
65-3 1/4; Russell Brown was fourth behind three Kenyans in a faster mile (3:52.63 for Silas Kiplagat, Kenyan national indoor record) than the Wanamaker mile; Brown’s time was a PR 3:54.08, sixth on the all-time American indoor list,
In Albuquerque, where most of the current team competed, in her second outing since a horrific practice injury sidelined her for the 2011 season, alum Erica McLain improved by a foot to 44-6 in the triple jump. Whitney Liehr was third at 43-1/2. For the current team, Arantxa King won the long jump at 20-3,and Lori Carter lowered her school record in the 60m hurdles to 8.27 in her heat and then was fourth in the final at 8.32. She also won her section of the 200m in a decent 23.97. All this at altitude, to be sure.
And in Seattle where the curren team’s milers and up ran on the University of Washington’s oversize track, Michael Atchoo became the 372d American to run the mile under four minutes, winning his section in 3:59.92. Jake Riley (sixth, 13:39.58) and Brendan Gregg (10th, 13:48.64) were under 14 minutes in the 5,000. Kathy Kroeger ran a good 15:46.26 for fifth in the seeded women’s 5,000, just behind Jordan Hasay and just ahead of another Oregonian, Alex Kosinski.
And in St. Louis Sara Hall won the national cross country champisonship.
