The thing about the student section at Maples Pavilion...
Is that there is no organization, in my opinion. There are a ton of cheers that the 6th Man performs, but I feel that there are a lot of students that don’t actually know them. The 6th Man should team up with AxeComm and teach students the cheers before the game starts (like what AxeComm does at the first football game with students back on campus) instead of putting them in tiny fonts on paper that most students leave on the floor.
I know AxeComm is primarily focused with the maintenance of the Axe (and thus, revolves more around football traditions), but there should be more of AxeComm leading cheers and running up and down the court getting the 6th Man more involved. I point to AxeComm, of course, because they probably have easier access to the courtside than random undergrads. :-)
But what I think really hurts participation at basketball games is that the current undergrad population has never experienced a tourney caliber team and as such, they haven’t seen what Stanford basketball can really achieve.

This is sad to read
Back in my day, everyone just kind of figured them out.

Yeah, 6th Man has really gone downhill.
I think it was really Mike Montgomery’s baby, and hasn’t been as focused on or paid attention to by Trent or Johnny Dawkins. I’ve noticed especially this year that even though all 6th man members have the t-shirts, only a handful of them wear them. That’s a huge problem because it just looks like some students hanging out, half interested in the game.
As for getting AxeComm involved, I’m not sure that’s necessary. When I was attending games as a 6th man member, some of the organizers had handouts that they gave to everyone so that we would all know the general cheers (turning around when opposing teams are announced, yelling at a player who fouls, etc), and then some specific cheers as well. Even if people didn’t read the papers, it only took a few (maybe 3 to 4?) hardcore fans who knew all of the cheers, and everyone else would follow along.
I have a feeling this is a general problem across sports, because I’ve noticed that fans at the football games have the same disorganization.

Didn't the redcoats use to enforce the shirts rule?
I remember distinctly some redcoats keeping students out or forcing them to the side by the visitor’s tunnel if they didn’t have shirts. In essence, for TV purposes (even when a game wasn’t televised), you could only get to center court if you had a shirt.
I guess with the decline of 6th Man (to the point they openly ask young alumni to come join), that rule doesn’t make sense too much to enforce nowadays.

Yeah, I think you're right
I hardly think it’s much to ask the students to wear shirts if they’re going to attend, though. If they go through the “trouble” of showing up to Maples to watch a game, they should at least have to have their shirts on. i don’t think that would discourage many people from attending, since they all have the shirts anyway. I went to the first game of the season and the students had just been given their shirts, and many of them carried the shirts but did not put them on while they were in the 6th man section. Poor form.
