I don't know if Tom Taylor is a freshman
But I don’t think he fully understands Stanford’s football culture. We’re just not the type of school that he wants Stanford to be. The admins wouldn’t allow it, the athletic department wouldn’t allow it, and most importantly, the alums wouldn’t allow it.
There’s a reason why Stanford fans are known as the least rude fans to visitors. It’s because no one wants to have the same type of image associated with the school that persists at other places around the conference, such as at Arizona, USC, and Oregon. What Tom is implicitly suggesting would never fly in Palo Alto for football.

Yeah, I agree to a point...
… but still, if you went to Maples 10 years ago, you would’ve seen some of the loudest, most creative and (yes) rudest fans in the Pac-10. I think Stanford students can work up the passion, but usually there is someone leading the group. It is impossible to get several thousand people to do the same thing over and over again without someone directing them. I know you didn’t like the yell leaders, but there was a time when they were effective. The cheerleaders (or whatever they are) that they run out there now don’t seem to serve any purpose.
Having said that, I think the environment will elevate once the competition does. The stadium has been reasonably loud, but still nowhere near level it was at when USC was in town last year or Notre Dame and Cal the year before.

Your memory seems to be going...
Because just a few years ago, we had yell leaders who weren’t great, but did lead some great cheers, such as: “Penetrate, penetrate, score, score” or “Increase the aggregate yardage.”
Granted, these probably aren’t passionate enough to rise to the level of rude cheers that Tom Taylor wants, but I think they at least added some breadth to our current cheering which is solely “Go, Stanford” and “Defense.” We don’t even get our keys out at kickoff anymore (or at least we didn’t at the away games I’ve been to). I agree with Tom that the cheering section could use a little spice, especially now that the band has been tamed down to essentially nothing provocative or out of line.
I don’t, however, agree that our “culture” holds us back from being rude. While we’re certainly not as passionate as Cal about our rivalry, I do think that our previous cheers were rude in their own way—because they were condescending!
